Pebble Time Smartwatch Raises $1 Million On Kickstarter In Less Than An Hour, Sets New Record

Pebble, the company responsible for the smartwatch, started taking new pre-orders for their new Pebble Time smartwatch on Tuesday morning on Kickstarter and raised one $1 million in less than an hour… 49 minutes to be exact.

This massive number of sales obviously set a new Kickstarter record.

“It’s clearly the fastest funding project in Kickstarter history,” a spokesperson for Kickstarter told CNN Money.

Pebble launched their first ever smartwatch on Kickstarter three years ago.

“This is where it all started. Three years ago you supported our vision to make the world’s first real smartwatch. The Kickstarter community and our early adopters believed in us before anyone else even knew we existed. You blew us away with your support and kicked off a worldwide movement!

“Your overwhelming support and feedback has shaped what Pebble is today. We’re back on Kickstarter to give you – the community who cares the most – an opportunity to support our vision for wearables and get exclusive access to our newest product.”

The Pebble Time is an updated version of Pebble’s original smartwatch. With a new timeline interface, Pebble Time has an e-paper display and microphone to reply to notifications. Not only is Pebble Time fully compatible with 6,500-plus existing Pebble apps and watch faces, it has the up to seven hours of battery life, is water resistant, and customizable.

While it shares many characteristics as the original Pebble smartwatch, the Pebble Time is 20 percent thinner at 9.5 millimeters making it more comfortable to wear on your wrist with its ergonomic design.

Currently, the Pebble Time comes in three colors: black, red, and white. However, the possibilities for the straps are endless — all standard 22 millimeter watch bands will fit.

Pebble is offering their new smartwatch for $179 if you back their campaign on Kickstarter. The first 10,000 people who backed their project received the watch for $159. If you are a two-time supporter of Pebble, you will receive a free engraving on the back of the watch.

“We decided to launch a Pebble Time Kickstarter because we feel it helps connect us directly with the people who helped us start, who believed in us before anyone else did,” Pebble’s CEO Eric Migicovsky said.

Pebble set a fairly low target amount of only $500,000. They quickly surpassed that number and currently have 48,453 backers with $10,502,585 in total pledges. The campaign will end on March 27, and Pebble will start shipping the watches sometime in May.

The previous Kickstarter campaign record was held by Reaper Miniature Bones, who raised $1 million in two hours and 42 minutes.
