New Netflix Movies And TV In March: Full List Includes All-New Tina Fey Comedy, ‘Mad Men’ Season 7
The new Netflix offerings for March appear light on the movies, but rich in the TV department, highlighted by the debut of an edgy, all-new comedy from creator Tina Fey, who ended her seven year run on the NBC hit 30 Rock in 2013.
While Tina Fey doesn’t star in the show, she says she and collaborator Robert Carlock created the series specifically for star Ellie Kemper, who appeared in another NBC hit sitcom, The Office.
But though Fey told the New York Times that she believes NBC would have aired her new show, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, if she had insisted, the network did not appear fully committed to the sitcom and it would have bombed in the ratings.
As a result, Fey and Carlock took the project to Netflix, where they found a willing buyer for the quirky comedy about a woman attempting to readjust to daily life in the real world after 15 years surviving underground in a doomsday cult.
Fey said she was sensitive to the criticism that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt could be seen as making light of a terrifying ordeal that has affected far too many victims, but she believes the show carries a hopeful message.
“In my heart, I believe it’s O.K. to tell a positive story about a survivor,” she told The Times. “We’ll see if that turns out to be correct or not.”
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt debuts on Netflix on March 6.
On March 22, Netflix premieres episodes 1-7 of the seventh and final season of the acclaimed AMC period drama, Mad Men. As the cable network did with another of its hit shows, Breaking Bad, AMC divided the final season of Mad Men into two parts. The first seven episodes will now stream on Netflix, just in time for the Season 7 Part 2 debut — the final episodes of the series — April 5 on AMC.
