Dwight Schrute Office Spin-Off Reportedly in the Works

dwight-schrute-office-spin-off-rainn wilsonDwight Schrute aficionados have reason to rejoice – NBC is reportedly planning a spinoff of “The Office” featuring the oddly amusing life of Rainn Wilson.

The news comes from Deadline, which reports that the possible spinoff is very much in the early development stages as of now.

The idea apparently came from Wilson (Schrute) and Office showrunner Paul Lieberstein (Toby on the show), who were toying around with the idea of a series based on the Schrute Farms bed & breakfast, which has made an appearance in a couple of episodes.

“Paul and Rainn have been joking for years about Dwight’s life on the farm, his family and how ill-suited he is to run a B&B,” a source told Deadline. “A while ago, it started to feel like a show to them. NBC agreed, it’s been further developed to include multiple generations, many cousins and neighbors. At its base it will be about a family farm struggling to survive and a family trying to stay together.”

Although no specific details have been finalized, if the pilot is a go, rumors are that Wilson would return to the The Office for Season 9 in the fall, then effectively segue to the new show halfway through the season.

It’s unclear whether a new member would join The Office cast to take Dwight’s place.

As pointed out by the HDroom.com, NBC has pulled this type of spin-off before when Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier character left Cheers to join his family in Seattle.

Office fans chime in with your thoughts on the matter. Would The Office suffer greatly if Rainn Wilson left the cast? Would you watch a spinoff centered around Dwight Schrute and his family’s infamous beet farm?

It sounds like a good idea. It would be funny. But him leaving the Office scares me. When Micha left it went down hill. Mr. California kinda kills the show for us and Andy doesn't exactly fit as the manager on the show. It would be funnier if the Dwight was the manager after all. :) Just my opinion.
