Terell Owens out of work and going broke, says he’s ‘in hell’

In the latest issue of GQ, Terell Owens proudly shows off the fact that he’s still managed to stay in shape despite being out of the NFL, and says that he’s ready to get back to playing.

Problem is, no one seems to want him. As much as he insists that he’s fully recovered from a knee injury that required surgery this past summer and is eager to get back into the NFL, no one is biting. And that’s a problem for him, because he says he’s run out of that $80 million he earned from playing in the NFL.

In an extensive interview in the February issue of GQ, Owens makes it clear that he’s in a dark place; whenever a friend or relative calls to ask where he is, he responds “I’m in hell”. It may appear on the surface that Owens threw away his fortune earned by playing in the NFL, but the 15-year NFL vet insists that it wasn’t that. Instead, he says his financial advisers are to blame.

“I hate myself for letting this happen,” Owens told GQ. “I believed that they had my back when they said, ‘You take care of the football, and we’ll do the rest. And in the end, they just basically stole from me.”

Considering that controversy followed Owens all over the NFL, it would be easy to pin the blame on him. He was routinely unsportsmanlike, arrogant, and was reportedly responsible for some tense moments in the locker room. Owens shoots that notion down in the interview, and says that he was just being “honest”.

“In terms of what I said, well, my grandma brought me up to be honest,” Owens said. “And in terms of what I did, well, I will tell you this, and you will never be able to convince me otherwise, if another player who had performed as well as I have on the field had done those same things, they would shake their little heads and say, ‘You gotta admire his enthusiasm,’ or, ‘Just look at how much he loves the game!’ He’d be a hero.”

Terell Owens recently signed on as a player and co-owner of the Indoor Football League’s Allen Wranglers.
