Jon Kitna, Former NFL QB, to High School Alma Mater’s Football Team

Former Seahawks quarterback Jon Kitna is planning on passing on some of his wisdom to students and athletes alike at his High School alma mater in Washington.

A Tacoma native and Central Washington University graduate, Kitna, 39, recently announced his retirement from pro football after spending 15 years in the NFL with four different teams.

Kitna started his pro career with the Seahawks in 1997, and was starting QB in 1999 when Seattle won the AFC West title.

In 2001, after being cut by new coach Mike Holmgren, Jon Kitna went to Cincinnati, where he led the Bengals to the wild-card playoffs and was named NFL Comeback Player of the Year by The Associated Press.

Following his run as a Bengal, Jon spent 2 years in Detroit before finishing his career in Dallas.

On Monday, Kitna kicked off a new chapter in his life, starting a new job as a part-time math teacher at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, and has applied for the open football coach position, according to The News Tribune.

According to the Tribune, Kitna played at Lincoln before starring at Central Washington, helping the Wildcats win the NAIA national title in 1995.

Speaking on his desire to teach and coach, Jon previously said:

“My wife and I always felt like these years in the NFL have prepared us for what our real calling in life is going to be as teachers and running a high school football program,” Kitna told The News Tribune in December. “I don’t think there’s anything that has changed from that. God has used my time in the NFL to train me to be ready to train young men to be authentic, real leaders, and to have a positive impact on society. And I want to use the avenue of football to do that. So I am very clear, and my wife is very clear in our calling.”
