‘Mortal Kombat X’ To Add Iconic Comic Character?

Mortal Kombat X is scheduled for release on April 14 across Xbox 360 and Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PS4, as well as PC, and it has been making waves continually throughout the gaming community since it was announced last summer. Those waves are now ripples in the comic book community too, as news has recently been released that comic icon Spawn may join the roster of characters already announced for the game.

Todd McFarlane, creator of Spawn, explained to GamerFitNation in an interview that while he gave permission for NetherRealm Studios to use his character in the upcoming Mortal Kombat X, it is a “short deal” and it may not be offered for long.

“That means that they have access to be able to use the character in a couple of their games, if they want to. Again, it’s up to their discretion. I gave them a window of time, so I’ll just leave it to them to do what it is that they want. Eventually, they’ll phone me and they’ll go, ‘Hey, we want to use him here. Is that OK?’ Well, technically, it’s OK because we’ve already said yes. They are just are letting us know.”

However, McFarlane stressed that just because he’s given permission to the Mortal Kombat X developers to use Spawn doesn’t mean that they will right away.

“Well, I don’t know if they’re ever going to use him. They just might squat. They might squat on him.”

This hasn’t been the only character rumor for the Mortal Kombat X game, however. Recently, fans have questioned whether a Predator would be added following a tease from Ed Boon and petitions have circulated online to have other characters that fans would like to see added too, such as Oderus Urungus from the band GWAR to appear in the game as a tribute to him.

Currently, the Mortal Kombat X roster boasts 14 fighters, including some of the most recognizable names in the Mortal Kombat games including Scorpion, Kitana, Raiden, Kano, Sub-Zero, and Goro, among others.

Mortal Kombat X wouldn’t be the first appearance of Spawn if NetherRealm Studios decide to add him into the game: the character has had five of his own video games, and appeared as a special character on the Xbox version of Soulcaliber II.

There is also the possibility of Spawn appearing in Injustice: Gods Among Us 2, which is also in production by NetherRealm Studios. The first installment of the game, Injustice: Gods Among Us saw the Mortal Kombat veteran character Scorpion appear as a DLC option and was automatically included for buyers who picked up the Ultimate Edition of the game.
