Hide Your Time Lords, Doctor; Missy Is Back!

Doctor Who fans, hang on to your TARDIS, some interesting news just leaked to the public.

The Radio Times is reporting that the first bit of important news is that the first two episodes of the upcoming season will be a two-parter, “The Magician’s Apprentice” and “The Witch’s Familiar. This brings us to the second bit of good news for Whovians. Everyone’s favorite new protagonist, Missy, played deliciously by Michelle Gomez, is returning sooner rather than later.

This, of course, means that Missy’s death in the Season 8 finale, “Death In Heaven,” was greatly exaggerated.

This two-parter, written by showrunner Steven Moffat and directed by Blink director Hattie MacDonald, is the second two-parter to be filmed for this season. The two-parter already in the can is for later in the season.

When asked about Missy’s return, Moffat said, “Everybody hide – Michelle Gomez as Missy was an instant hit last year, so she’s straight back to plague the Doctor and Clara in the series opener. But what brings her back into their lives is the last thing they’d expect.” A most intriguing statement.

Gomez had been telling others of her intent to return, telling Doctor Who Magazine last year, “I’ll be back. Can I say that? Am I allowed? If not… well, I guess we’ll have to see how she’s received…”

Digital Spy is reporting that Gomez was quoted as saying, “Things have been a little beige since I left Missy behind, so I’m delighted to be putting my lippie back on. I’m positively dying to see the Doctor again!”

It is also being reported that Jemma Redgrave is returning to reprise her role as Kate Lethbridge Stewart when Season 9 begins. This plot line will concentrate more on her taking over UNIT in the place of her father, Colonel Lethbridge Stewart, when she took the role in the 50th Anniversary episode, “The Day Of The Doctor,” as well as the in last two episodes of Season 8, “Dark Water” and “Death In Heaven”.

Actors who have been confirmed for the two-parter season premiere is Kelly Hunter, who fans may recognize as a member of the Sisterhood of Karn from “The Night of the Doctor”. Also scheduled to appear are theater and television actors Clare Higgins, who was previously in “Silent Witness”, and Jaye Griffiths, who was featured in “Casualty”.

Doctor Who, Season 9, is scheduled to make its return later this year. No timetable has been set yet.
