While apparently there had already been a 50 percent increase since 2007 in injuries involving sex toys in the U.S., reportedly cases have now skyrocketed since the release of the bondage-themed film, Fifty Shades of Grey.
According to the Washington Post, the estimated numbers come from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, which has apparently been tracking casualty admissions since 1991.
Apparently the injuries listed relating to “massage devices and vibrators” were pretty low at first but started to surge from around 2005, with 1,500 requiring treatment for sex injuries across the nation.

Who knew they went into this much detail, but apparently those most likely to suffer such injuries are middle aged men, with male patients taking up 58 percent of the cases with a median age of 44. The women tended to have a median age of 30. Reportedly the oldest man on record as receiving treatment for this kind of injury was aged 85 and the oldest woman was 67, so it seems we never learn.
In 2012 there was apparently a large surge in the number of sex injuries with 2,500 people needing treatment. While the first Fifty Shades of Grey novel was released in 2011, there is currently no evidence that the fact millions of people had read the book had any affect on the percentages. The movie, however, is a different story.

However with all the titillating trailers of the upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey movie, this is likely to cause another huge increase. Reportedly all over the world sex shops have been busy stocking up on all the necessary fun toys prior to the film’s release. The Telegraph particularly mentions whips, pleasure balls and spanking paddles as being the items of choice.
Apparently just the novels alone gave Babeland in New York a 40 percent increase in sales, so apparently they are stocking up in anticipation of what the movie will do to attract yet more business.
According to Neal Slateford, who owns the British company Lovehoney, which has handled a range of Fifty Shades of Grey products in the past, they are also expecting a huge increase in business.
“We have experienced spikes in sales after each movie trailer has been released which gives us a good indication of just how influential this movie will be.”
Some people are even taking to Twitter offering to help prevent this type of injury.

Many other businesses have been doing their best to tie on to the film’s coattails, so to speak. The Inquisitr reported recently on the dapper looking Fifty Shades of Grey teddy bears on offer as the perfect Valentine’s gift.
