John Legend Defends Kanye West’s Actions At The Grammys

John Legend is defending Kanye West’s stunt that he pulled at the Grammys. As all of you may know, West took to the stage after Beck won the award for Album of the Year. Instead of taking the mic away, like he did during Taylor Swift’s 2009 VMA speech, he simply sat back down.

Although some people thought this was rude regardless if he stole the mic or not, others thought Kanye’s latest stunt was a joke. His interview with E! following the Grammys proved otherwise. It turns out Kanye West was dead serious about what he pulled when Beyoncé lost out to Beck.

Despite this, some people are defending Kanye West’s actions on Sunday night. Singer John Legend told Us Weekly that he thought the moment was funny.

Apparently, not getting the memo that West was serious, Legend said, “I looked at it as just a funny thing that people were going to talk about. It didn’t hurt anybody. Anybody who’s upset just needs to relax.”

In response to Kanye’s actions, Beck was pretty relaxed about the whole thing. At the time Beck said, “I was just so excited he was coming up. [West] deserves to be onstage as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right? I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyoncé!… You can’t please everybody, man. I still love [West] and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”

During Kanye’s interview with E!, he said Beck needed to respect artistry.

“If they want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us. Flawless Beyoncé video, and Beck needs to respect artistry, and he should have given his award to Beyoncé. At this point, we tired of it! Because what happens is, when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration.”

Even though Legend stuck up for West, he still had no grievances towards Beck. “Beck is super talented and I have several of his albums and I’ve listened to him for a long time. I think people were surprised that he won but that doesn’t mean he’s not deserving, that just means people thought other people were going to win too.”
