According to Digital Spy Sheeran and Mayer agreed to design tattoos for each other prior the Sheeran’s appearance on the Late Late Show. The pair then went and had their new ink applied and covered up without ever seeing the design. Sheeran and 37-year-old Mayer then revealed the new designs on television during the show.

When the tattoos were revealed on air, Sheeran had the words “Kool Guy” on his upper right arm. Mayer had a small cat’s head on his chest. According to Sheeran, Mayer’s tattoo had a naughty double meaning.

Sheeran joked “When you show it to kids, you can be like, ‘Oh, it’s a kitty cat!’ And you can chat up women and be like, ‘I’m into pussies myself’.”

According to Yahoo! News, after the tattoo reveal Sheeran and Mayer performed Ed’s hit song “Don’t” on the show. Mayer, who has won seven Grammys himself, played guitar and sang backing vocals on Sheeran’s song.

The Mail claims that this choice of song could easily have caused an awkward moment for Mayer. When the song was released last year it was widely rumored to be about Mayer’s ex-girlfriend, Taylor Swift. Sheeran and Swift are close friends and Mayer dated her in 2009 and 2010.

Shortly after the songs release Sheeran denied that it was about Swift, saying that it was “about someone who’s well-known, but not Taylor.” Mayer has never denied that his single “Paper Doll” was about Taylor Swift and a response to her song “Dear John.

Taylor is renowned for recording songs about her ex lovers, she did the same after her well publicised break-up with One Direction star Harry Styles.

John Mayer is one of a number of celebrities given the chance to host the iconic “Late Late Show” following Craig Ferguson’s departure last December. Director Judd Apatow and comedian Drew Carey are among other guest hosts to front the show before James Corden takes over on March 23.

While Sheeran may have left the Grammy Awards empty handed, his performance of “Thinking Out Loud” with Mayer has helped to propel the song back to the top of the iTunes download chart.
