Traffic Woes: LAPD Shoots Carjacker, New Jersey Turnpike Accident Kills One


Officers of the Los Angeles Police Department shot an armed man after he hijacked a woman’s vehicle and led authorities on a chase which resulting in his arrest.

Police pursued the suspect around 5 p.m. west of downtown L.A. after they received a report of a possible stolen car. The suspect sped down streets, at times against the flow of traffic, and then hopped onto Imperial Highway where he pulled out what, an ABC News report indicated, appeared to be a firearm before stealing a women’s car and entering the 710 Freeway.

The report indicated that the suspect’s condition was not known, but authorities had taken him into custody. The report also stated that he had struck several vehicles with his car.

Fox 5 San Diego reported that the man crashed his car around 5:30 p.m. and literally ran onto the highway where he carjacked the woman. The report indicated that there were at least eight LAPD officers trailing him down 710 while helicopters hovered overhead, tracking his every movement.

After traffic slowed his attempt to flee by motor vehicle, the man exited the recently stolen vehicle and was chased by police officers on foot. The police then opened fire as he attempted to carjack a second motorist in East L.A., according to an KCBS-TV report.

In New Jersey, local law enforcement reported a multi-vehicle crash on the icy Jersey Turnpike. The Monday night crash involved at least 15 vehicles and left at least one person dead. There were reports of multiple injuries, according to a report on ABC News.

The state police indicated that the pile-up occurred at milepost 71 in the southbound lanes and that the crash involved a couple of box trucks, a fully loaded bus, multiple cars, and four tractor-trailers.

The ABC report indicated that troopers had closed down all of the lanes and were on the scene investigating the fatal collision. The report quoted State Police Sergeant Jeff Flynn as having said that there was “no indication at this point” that weather had played a factor in the deadly accident.

In other recent news regarding deadly car accidents on Inquisitr, reality television star, and former Olympian, Bruce Jenner, was involved in a three-vehicle car accident in Malibu which left one driver dead after their Lexus sedan spun into the street and was struck by a Hummer H2. Jenner’s publicist said that his client was not injured, but didn’t provide additional details.
