Man Who Looks Like The Joker Allegedly Tries To Rob A Walmart

A man from upstate New York was recently accused of trying to rob a Walmart, but observers on social media quickly fixated on his resemblance to the Joker, Batman’s arch-nemesis.

Anthony MacDowell, 20, of Utica, was arrested on Monday according to WKTV, after allegedly attempting to steal from a local Walmart. Officers were called to the store around 6:45 p.m. for a shoplifting complaint, and Walmart security asserted that they observed MacDowell trying to steal around $620 worth of merchandise. When security tried to stop him, they claim he fled. Officers later located MacDowell at a Bass Pro Shop near the Walmart, and took him into custody.

As soon as MacDowell’s booking photo was posted online, commenters began remarking on his resemblance to the Joker, particularly as the character was interpreted by Heath Ledger in 2008’s The Dark Knight. As Barstool Sports Iowa points out, MacDowell sports a scar on either side of his mouth, just like the self-inflicted wounds that characterized Ledger’s over-the-top, iconic portrayal of the Joker.

It is unclear when MacDowell sustained the wounds, and there is no reason to believe they are connected to the Walmart incident or were self-inflicted. Yet, the resemblance to the Joker is striking, as many commenters pointed out.

“I think we found The Joker as a young man. Now to find young Batman and let him know Joker has been found,” one suggested.

“Is he trying to look like the Joker?” another openly wondered.

Still others asserted that there was more to the wounds than their cursory connection to the Joker.

“Actually those cuts look like a Glasgow grin… used by gang members in Glasgow, Scotland and also used by London gangs where the scars are known as a Chelsea or Cheshire smile,” an observer chimed in.

Multiple comments alleged that the wounds were similar to those inflicted on “snitches” by some prison gangs.

Although Ledger’s performance as the Joker was widely praised, earning him a posthumous Academy Award, his untimely death prevented him from ever taking on the role again. As the Inquisitr has previously reported, Jared Leto is set to play the villain in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie, the first actor to step into the role of the Joker since Ledger.

In spite of comments regarding his resemblance to the Joker, MacDowell was charged with petit larceny for the Walmart incident.
