Bushfire arsonist Brendan Sokaluk worships mother earth on spooky MySpace page

brendan-sokaluk

The suspected arsonist behind one of the fires that killed hundreds in Victoria, Australia has been named.

Brendan Sokaluk, 39 of Churchill was named after a Victorian court lifted a suppression order allowing him to be named by the media.

Sokaluk has been charged with arson causing death, lighting a bushfire and one count of possessing child pornography. The Churchill fire he is alleged to have started burnt out more than 30,000 hectares and killed 21 people.

Sokaluk maintains a MySpace page that given what he has done is spooky.

Sokaluk was clearly bitter on a couple of fronts. A failed relationship with someone called Alexandra resulted in a profile comment of “my interest are to enjoy life to the fallest [sic] and not with alexandra because she roots behind your back and lies a lot.”

The page is scattered with appalling spelling, suggesting that Sokaluk may have been illiterate, or had suffered a learning disability.

In the hero section, Sokaluk writes ” my heroe [sic] is mother earth with out her we all would be dead.”

His MySpace profile also suggests that Sokaluk has an affiliation to a US religious group by the name of “The Truth of God,” a group known to hold extreme views against women clergy and gay people.

Sokaluk worked for his own company, Brendan Scrap Metal Pickup, in Hazelwood, Victoria.

Due to a court suppression order in Victoria that may or may not apply to this site (I’m in Victoria, but the site isn’t hosted in Australia), we’ve decided to go on the side of caution and not publish his picture, or his home address per the restrictions given by the court, however you can view his picture on his MySpace page here.

While we are at it, from his MySpace friend list he is friends with some guy called Tom. Everyone that is any sort of trouble and has a myspace seems to be friends with this guy Tom. Do you think the Police should contact Tom as it seems more then a coincidence that they are all friends with the same guy! Maybe you should write a story on this Tom guy and his links to bad people that do Bad things!

  3. Mollyfud, Seriously this is not a joke this man is a serious danger!
You should consider peoples feelings about the related subject before posting somthing like that for us all to see!!!

  4. Mollyfud, I think you should rethink before posting anymore comments about this matter, alot of peple have been extreamly hurt and your insensitivity isnt helping!!!
Seriously if you dont have anything constuctive to say just dont say anything!

You are 100% correct that this is a serious matter and that is why I personally don't see that it is a good thing that peoples Myspaces are being used to try and make a judgement on a guy that is obviously mentally troubled!

Huh? Sorry if I have upset you or anyone else. Perhaps I should suggest that people like lighting fires instead!

  7. wow! you are a moron!
You decided not to publish his picture but publish his business name and its location.
You publish his age, a link to his myspace page and name the area he lives in despite being aware that there is a 'suppression order' in place in the jurisdiction where you live.
You published this article on the 15th the suppression order was lifter on the 16th.
So umm like you ignored the suppression order. Gee that's like umm contempt of court isnt it…

And I wouldn't get too righteous about his spelling when you post on a website called 'inquisitr'

  8. I wonder if he's related to the Seymour Sokaluks?

To be fair to Duncan, it is the 15th still in some parts of the world (or at least would have been when he wrote/published it). My guess is that Duncan is using some sort of US time zone.

  10. True and I apologise for my intemperate language but the last paragraph is quite clear; at least part of the article was published before the suppression order was lifted.

  11. I fail to see how this guy seeing “mother earth” as his hero is the same as worshipping. Nor how that one little detail makes the guy's myspace page “spooky”.

Is the author trying to make some obscure link between pagans and arsonists to put a religious spin on what is little more than “Look, he's got a myspace page! Here's some juicy goissip about him!”

    Tabloid journalism, Duncan, tabloid journalism.

Nice compassion. And good to see you were brave enough to put your name to such a stupid comment!

  19. Yeah!

  20. I can't figure out why you feel that a suspected arsonist, who allegedly killed 180 people, deserves 'compassion.' He deserves 'justice,' whatever justice is in this case, which is coming in the form of the courts.

You sound like the type who would feel more sympathy for a rapist with a premature ejaculation problem than you would feel for his victim. Shove your compassion. You know where.

  21. Its hard to think clearly up here on my soap box, due to the rarefied oxygen. So I should have said 'who allegedly killed 21 people.'

  22. I don't think you understand the person's ideas behind the sarcastic comment that she made.

It probably has more to do with the piling on to an already bad situation. If you like watching shows like Nancy Grace, good for you, but if you don't like those shows that does not mean that you have compassion for the people on the show.

She seems to be commenting to the fact that someone was not trying to be helpful or informative, but was engaging in a sort of blood lust for an already wounded target and didn't even own up to his own comment.

If you “…cant figure out…” something you should try harder or ask questions instead of just attacking the person who said something that you “…cant figure out…”

    a) Its He not she.
    b) Perhaps Compassion is the wrong word. From what I have heard it sounds like the guy has mental issues. Having dealt/been around people with mental issues lately, you have to wonder if (assuming it is true the guy has issues) it is 100% his fault or if we as a scoeity have to look at ourselves and say did we help him enough. Perhaps the answer is yes.
So, 1000% yes he should face the court and wear what ever punishment is coming him but is saying “I hope someone can burn his house down” helpful? No.
In fact if anything it justifies the courts idea of putting a supression order on the guys name. I mean are we as a public really helped by knowing it or does it just open up the media to this sort of crap and does it just put poor victims, maybe in a bad mental place themselves, in risk of doing something silly against this guy and/or his family.

My God, you are right! I just checked and Tom is at the head of my friends list too. Am I going to be implicated in the arson? lol

I'm more interested in the fact that he belongs to a religious group that hates women clergy and women.

  26. Simply not true. This site operates in US Pacific Time. The suppression order was lifted 2 hours before this post went up, and you'll find that we have never once breached the order. We can't publish his home address, or image, and we've done neither. The order did not state that we could not link to it…hell, I could have linked to Google News, it had the picture attached front and center.

Whether we're even bound by the order is another question again given this site is hosted in the United States and constitutes published in the US under US law, however I decided none the less to follow the suppression order anyway.

  27. I'm aware of the case, and it related to defamation, not statement of facts in the public domain.

Should a permanent stay of prosecution be the result of yours and others idiotic belief that linking to Brendans profiles and printing of privledged information is your right ande responsibility, please be sure to take your portion of the blame when 45 lives are lost and no justice is possible. A certain result of pages like this will be a protective order for Brendan and the cost will be ours.
