Bobbi Kristina Brown Dead? Whitney Houston’s Daughter Reportedly Brain Dead, Recovery Would Be A ‘Miracle’

Bobbi Kristina Brown is reportedly brain dead, with sources close to the situation saying it would be a miracle if Whitney Houston’s daughter was able to recover.

The 21-year-old was found unresponsive in her bathtub on Saturday and rushed to a hospital. Doctors have kept her in a medically induced coma in an attempt to prevent brain swelling, but doctors have reportedly told the family that her hopes of recovering are not good.

A source told People magazine that the chances for recovery look bleak, adding that, “doctors say that a recovery is technically possible, but if it happens, it’ll be a miracle.”

It is still not known how long Bobbi Kristina Brown was not breathing before she was found, but experts say even a few minutes can lead to irreversable damage. In a story published in The Daily Beast, Dr. Anand Veeravagu and Dr. Jay Nathan explain:

So while it remains unclear as to what led to Bobbi’s unconsciousness, it is fairly likely that she suffered oxygen deprivation to her brain. The brain is especially sensitive to oxygen deprivation; early symptoms include confusion, lethargy, and dizziness. Just two minutes of a lack of oxygen can lead to irreversible brain damage.

Police are still looking into the incident, and reportedly found drugs in Brown’s home during a second, more thorough search of her home.

The coming hours will likely be critical for Brown’s chances of survival. Paul Vespa, a professor of neurosurgery and neurology and director of the neurointensive care unit at the University of California-Los Angeles, told KHOU that doctors typically using cooling therapy in an attempt to reduce brain swelling after it has been deprived of oxygen. This process takes about 72 hours, and after the temperate returns to normal they can run tests like EEG, MRI or CAT scan to assess brain damage.

While the results of such tests have not been made public, experts say doctors will likely know soon whether Bobbi Kristina Brown is brain dead.
