‘Gotham’ Spoilers: Season 1 ‘Will Scratch The Surface’ Of The Joker, Plus Nygma’s Journey To Becoming The Villain

Gotham Season 1 is going to be introducing more well-known characters in upcoming episodes, from the eventual parents of Dick Grayson (a.k.a. Robin) to supervillains The Scarecrow and The Red Hood. There’s also one character coming in a way that fans might not have expected to see this early on in the series.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, there’s a theory that Oswald Cobblepot is The Joker on Gotham and not the Penguin. Well, whether or not that is true, TV Guide reports that executive producer Bruno Heller has teased that the story of The Joker is going to be addressed on the Fox series sooner than expected — as in by the end of Season 1 — but it’s going to be done in a way that will likely leave fans wanting more. (It’s a good thing the series has already been renewed for a second season then.)

“We’ve said you’re going to be waiting a bit longer for it, but this is America – nobody wants to wait. So, we will scratch the surface of that story, yes. But just scratch it – a little tap on the door.”

Heller also teased that the rest of Gotham Season 1 will focus on how Edward Nygma becomes The Riddler.

“Penguin [Robin Lord Taylor] was born a sociopath and was always going down this path one way or another. Nygma is someone who becomes the villain, and we see that journey begin in the second half of the season.”

One thing that might send him on that journey is what happens with Kristen Kringle, the file clerk. According to Chelsea Spack, even if it seems like they may be taking a step forward, that’s likely not to remain the case for long.

“What motivates people to do things is oftentimes love. He is slowly starting to break through her defenses, but we take two steps forward and then one step back. It’s not smooth sailing for Edward Nygma. It’s complicated for her to have somebody’s feelings in her hand. It’s not as simple as rejecting somebody and having a clean conscience because she’s starting to realize how deeply he cares.”

Watch a sneak peek from this week’s episode featuring Edward Nygma. It doesn’t end well for him.

Among the characters coming up in the rest of Gotham Season 1 is Dr. Francis Dulmacher, a.k.a. The Dollmaker, a character that was played by Michael Eklund in Arrow Season 2, and will now be played by Colm Feore. As Deadline pointed out, Feore “has comic book bad guy credentials.” He was Donald Menken in Amazing Spider-Man 2 and King Laufey in Thor.

The Dollmaker was mentioned in Episode 2 as the person behind the kidnapping of the street kids. After that, his character’s description should be no surprise.

“With a zealotry bordering on madness, and aided by his genius-level intellect and vast medical expertise, Dr. Dulmacher pursues his demented researches, even as the bloody costs of his actions grow even greater.”

Gotham Season 1 airs Mondays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
