Is Justin Bieber’s New Song About Selena Gomez? If So, What Now?

Justin Bieber’s drop of two new music snippets on Instagram early Wednesday has left many wondering if the Canadian star is addressing his relationship with his ex-girlfriend, Selena Gomez, in one of them.

The former couple broke up last September, for reasons which remain unclear in spite of endless tabloid speculation.

In the first clip that Justin posted, he asks self-analyzing, seemingly spiritual questions over acoustic guitar.

“How do our lives become lighter? / How do our eyes become brighter? / Got to believe in something higher,” the 20-year-old singer sings in the first 15-second snippet.

However, in his second Instagram, the heartthrob moves on to singing about a relationship that’s gone wrong.

Is it about the former Jelena romance or just a song about relationships in general? Based on Justin’s past track record with ballads such as “Nothing Like Us” and “All That Matters,” it’s highly likely he was referring to his romance with the actress-singer. But it’s not certain.

That didn’t stop one site from insisting the Biebs is “begging for forgiveness from Selena Gomez.”

To reach this conclusion, Hollywood Life changed a key part of the lyric — by mistake or deliberately.

Justin’s second song lyric reads, “When it’s raining, it’s pouring/How do I always end up the enemy?/How do I wake up in the morning and you’re not right next to me?/ How did we throw it all away?”

Yet, somehow on the Hollywood Life’s blog, that lyric became as follows.

“When it’s raining, it’s pouring/How do I always end up the enemy?/ How do I wake up in the morning and you’re not right next to me?/ How did I throw it all away?”

It’s a crucial change. By changing the word “we” to “I,” only one person is responsible for throwing away the relationship, instead of both.

Looking at other lines, “How do I always end up the enemy?” It’s exactly the opposite of begging for forgiveness.

In fact, it sounds like someone protesting at being blamed for something they believe they did not do.

Justin and Selena broke up countless times during their four year, on-off relationship. The starlet later sang of her pain, heartbreak and joy in their romance in her latest single, “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” which was co-written in 2013.

More recently, TMZ reported Justin is happily single and isn’t dating friends Hailey Baldwin and Kendall Jenner, despite rumors.

Meanwhile, Selena has been shooting a new film in Atlanta with actor Paul Rudd. The 22-year-old has been joined there by producer / EDM DJ Zedd. The pair have been spotted at local eateries and in social media posts together and are widely thought to be dating.

If Justin’s new music is about Selena, is he reaching out or singing about what could have been? The last time he wrote about his ex — namely on his 2013 Journals album — they reunited.
