BioWare blames “most” SWTOR performance issues on low-end PCs

A not insignificant number of users have been reporting performance issues while playing Star Wars: The Old Republic, including abnormally low frame rates even on the lowest of settings.

BioWare has responded to the users’ claims, claiming that performance issues only effect a “small number” of players, and that the performance issues in SWTOR can, for the most part, be attributed to “low-end” PCs.

“The thing is, for the most part, 95 per cent – oh I can’t give you the exact percentage – most of our players aren’t really having performance concerns,” Star Wars: The Old Republic game director James Ohlen told Eurogamer.

“However, we know that it’s important that there is a smaller group of people usually with lower end machines that are having problems in some areas. And one of the most important things for us to grow our service is to continue to bring in more players, including those players who only have low-end machines.”

Still, Ohlen went on to say that BioWare has a team of programmers looking into optimizing the code to alleviate the slowdowns some users have been experiencing. “..we have a client team, a team of programmers, whose entire job is to optimise the code, find out where some of the issues are, and then fix that up.”
