‘Borderlands 3’ Not Revealed, Development Hasn’t Started As Gearbox Focuses On ‘Battleborn’

Gearbox Software’s Randy Pitchford had the entire game industry on edge after teasing a possible Borderlands 3 announcement during a PAX South panel. The tease worked to get people to attend a Gearbox panel plus a Borderlands: Behind the Scenes panel on Sunday. Unfortunately, all it did was leave Borderlands fans wanting.

There was no livestream of The Borderlands: Behind the Scenes panel, so all information came from the subreddit for Borderlands, along with several Twitter feeds from individuals in attendance. Gearbox filled the panel with details on Claptrap’s original name, the change in art style for the game, and a 20 minute Q&A session that didn’t add much new information. Then the disappointment came raining down.

Pitchford stated during the panel that “There is literally nothing to tell” about another Borderlands game. Gearbox Software is currently “neck deep into Battleborn,” a co-op “hero shooter” with MOBA elements for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Battleborn was first announced in July 2014 and is expected to come out sometime in 2015. Presumably, work on Borderlands 3 would start after its release.

Pitchford did mention that they are looking for team member to develop “the next Borderlands game.” Again though, it sounds like a new Borderlands game is two to three years away, if not more, if development has not even started yet.

The Gearbox CEO’s statement Friday teasing a Borderlands 3 announcement still has left many fans upset, however. He stated at the time, “I’ll tell you what. We don’t know — that’s the honest answer — but if you come back to our main theater panel on Sunday, you might get a little more than that.”

Then the main theater panel came and went with no mention of Borderlands 3. Fans then had to wait for the entirety of the Borderlands: Behind the Scenes panel to find out that no, there is no Borderlands 3 announcement.

Fans were understandably perturbed.

Borderlands fans will have to make do with the current Borderlands 2 and The Pre-Sequel for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, plus the upcoming Handsome Collection re-release for PS4 and Xbox One. The Lady Hammerlock DLC was just announced today for The Pre-Sequel, along with a tease for a fourth DLC, focused on Claptrap.
