Netflix Renews ‘Doctor Who’ And Whovians Are Ecstatic The T.A.R.D.I.S. Is Here To Stay

Amid rumors circulating over the last week, Netflix was said to be dropping several BBC shows by the end of January. Doctor Who (both classic and the reboot), Torchwood, Luther, and The Office were just a few of the shows mentioned to be axed by Netflix.

The Netflix rumors spread quickly and caused fans of the popular British shows to take to social media to voice their anger and dismay. Not only did fans begin binge-watching these series, but Whovians started up petitions to send a message to Netflix that they wanted one show in particular to stay — their beloved Doctor Who. One of these petitions to save Doctor Who from Netflix’s chopping block gained a whopping 36,972 signatures, and that was just one of the petitions.

Fans weren’t the only ones to think these Netflix rumors were true — news outlets such as CNN were reporting it, too.

At last, on Friday, news spread that Netflix had renewed many BBC shows including Doctor Who, according to reports from Variety.

An emailed statement from Netflix spokeswoman Erin Dwyer reported the rumors were false and gave an “incomplete list” of shows that “are being renewed and will be here to stay with no delay in viewing” on Netflix. The list of BBC show staying on Netflix follows below.

  • Classic Doctor Who; 18 Collections
  • Copper, Seasons 1-2
  • Doctor Who, Seasons 1-7
  • House of Cards Trilogy
  • Keeping Up Appearances, Season 1
  • Luther, Seasons 1-3
  • Monarch of the Glen, Seasons 1-6
  • North & South
  • The Buccaneers
  • The Office (U.K.), Seasons 1-2
  • Torchwood, Seasons 1-4
  • Wallander, Seasons 1-3

BBC shows that will expire from Netflix at the end of this month include Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, MI-5, and Red Dwarf. That list from Netflix of expiring shows is incomplete. But one show that isn’t going anywhere is Doctor Who, and Whovians everywhere are celebrating the good news.

Not every BBC show on Netflix was up for renewal. Sherlock, Call the Midwife, Happy Valley, and The Honorable Woman were never in any danger of removal from Netflix at this time.

With Season 8 over and Season 9 of Doctor Who currently filming, now Whovians can breathe a sigh of relief and watch past seasons until Netflix adds Season 8 to its queue.

Did you believe the Netflix rumors? Are you going to miss the shows that won’t be renewed at this time?
