‘Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare’ Tops Sales Charts For All Of 2014

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was just named the best selling console title for 2014. It turns out that the newest Call of Duty game in the series might have gone quite a ways towards making sure there will be another. Before Advanced Warfare, it seemed as if the first-person shooter might be losing some steam, especially after Call of Duty: Ghosts.

Activision announced this week that Advanced Warfare topped all other console game offerings. When it came to kids games, Skylanders Trap Team managed to take the top spot. The top spot in sales numbers is certainly not something new for the series. This marks the sixth year in a row that the long-running franchise has made it to the top of the yearly sales charts. Despite brisk sales numbers, there was some talk that Advanced Warfare would be the one to determine whether the franchise as a whole would continue to be a yearly release.

In total, it’s been a very good year for Activision, who underlined that point with a statement in a recent release.

“We’d like to thank our fans for making ‘Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’ the #1 top-selling video game in the world, ‘Skylanders Trap Team’ the top-selling kids game in the world and ‘Destiny’ the #1 new video game IP of 2014,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

The collaboration between Activision and Bungie, Destiny took the third spot in the 2014 sales numbers, right behind Advanced Warfare and Madden NFL 15. Grand Theft Auto V might have looked like it was going to be able to give Advanced Warfare a run for its money when it was first released for the Xbox One and PS4, but it finished fourth.

Perhaps the most impressive contender to Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s throne was a game that came out rather late in the cycle. Super Smash Bros released during the summer for the Nintendo 3DS and for the Wii U this winter. The Nintendo exclusive ended up finishing sixth on the list.

Activision isn’t resting on its laurels when it comes to their most recent release. The game already has Kevin Spacey playing a prominent role in the story, and its new DLC will include John Malkovich, Rose McGowan, Jon Bernthal, and Bill Paxton as recurring characters. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare finished 2014 strong, as it was also the top selling game in December of 2014.
