Angela Bassett On Whitney Movie: Whitney ‘Let Me Know’ It Was Okay

Actress Angela Bassett recently opened up about the Whitney Houston biopic, claiming that she received a sign of approval from the singer herself.

In an interview with ET Online, the first-time director states that she felt Whitney’s presence every day that she worked on making the movie about her life and successful career. Bassett also explained the sign that was revealed to her during a trip to the production office.

“On this one particular day, I’m rolling down 134 and a big bus passes me. Her song is playing, and I’m getting off the exit at Laurel Canyon. I look to my left as her song is playing and there’s – on the back of a bus – a huge initial: W.H.”

Through the research that she did for the film, Angela discovered that Whitney’s favorite color was purple. She goes on to explain her initial reaction when she noticed that the W.H. initials she saw on the bus were painted purple.

“I was like, ‘I am so glad! Because girl, you done break me down and built me up. You let me know! You and the Lord [let me know] that it’s all right up there with you.'”

Bassett credits that alleged sign of divine intervention with the reassurance that she had when it came to the Whitney movie project and everything that came along with it.

“I’m like, ‘OK. Whatever comes, I’m ready. Let’s do it. I got you.’ It was a beautiful sign.”

Whitney Houston and Angela Bassett starred alongside each other in the 1995 Forest Whitaker-directed film Waiting to Exhale.

However, she has been criticized for taking on the Whitney movie project as her directorial debut since she did not really know Whitney Houston very well when she was alive. Angela addressed that criticism in her interview with ET Online by explaining how it is impossible to know everything about anybody.

“Listen, I live with my husband and don’t know everything about him and his every private thought! How can you know everything about anybody? Nobody knows everything about anybody. Some folks don’t even know their own mind!”

Bassett goes on to explain that she was still able to bring a lot to the table by focusing on the knowledge and experience that she did have. For instance, she admitted to knowing a “little something” about such things as struggling with the public eye, being a black American woman in the entertainment industry, and being a wife and mother.

When the Whitney movie premieres on Lifetime Saturday, millions of people will have a chance to see if what Angela Bassett knew a “little something” about was enough.
