‘Light Girls’ Movie: Watch New Sequel To ‘Dark Girls’ Movie On Oprah’s OWN [Video]

The much buzz-about movie called Dark Girls from director Bill Duke caused a splash in 2011, and now Duke has teamed once again with Oprah’s OWN channel to talk about light-skinned and dark-skinned issues in the new movie called Light Girls. Already, Oprah’s website has video of lighter-skinned women in Light Girls – some the famous faces of actresses – as they recount their childhood experiences with being of a fairer hue.

The Light Girls movie, which airs January 19 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on OWN, shows a plethora of so-called “light girls” delving into the pain they’ve felt from being called names or told they think they are better than dark girls. In video clips of the Light Girls movie, some of the women of lighter complexions cry as they talk about the violence they faced growing up, when certain girls threatened to cut their hair. One harrowing Light Girls scene shows a woman with a deep slash across her neck, the result of being cut by an attacker with a knife over issues of color.

As reported by the Inquisitr, the Light Girls movie shows Raven-Symoné discussing why she kept tanning her skin to look darker, until a lighting director told her to stop so they wouldn’t have to relight her entire show.

“When I had my own show, I used to tan three or four times a week in a tanning bed to get darker.”

Websites like the Huffington Post are buzzing about the Light Girls movie as well, especially due to the fact that interviews with everyone from Russell Simmons to India Arie, Iyanla Vanzant, Soledad O’Brien, Diahann Carroll, Michaela Angela Davis, Kym Whitley, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, and more can be seen in the movie during Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., weekend. The Light Girls movie will tackle the reaction on social media after the documentary Dark Girls aired – when Oprah admonished certain Twitter users for using the divisive #teamlightskin and #teamdarkskin hashtags.

The Light Girls movie will also talk about the controversial topic of skin bleaching, and discuss how Hollywood may often go with darker-skinned actresses instead of lighter-skinned actresses to prove that they aren’t biased toward light girls. Light Girls shows Chris Spencer of Real Husbands of Hollywood and Raven-Symoné of That’s So Raven talking about the roles that light girls miss out on due to that fact.

“A lot of times, you know, we might be in a situation where we want to make sure we cast a dark-skinned girl, so we’re passing up the light-skinned sisters. You might have a very talented actress who’s being, you know, overlooked because of her complexion.”

In the same manner that the Dark Girls documentary took social media by storm, no doubt Light Girls on OWN will do the same when it airs.
