UPDATE 9:22 a.m.

The Oscar nominees have been announced.

Leading the pack with nine nominations each are Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel. On the opposite end of the scale, the critically acclaimed Selma has been once again largely ignored, managing just two nominations.

One of those nods happens to be for Best Picture, but it will contend with fellow nominees Birdman, Boyhood, The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, The Grand Budapest Hotel, American Sniper, and Whiplash — and each of these movies have major buzz and accolades of their own behind them. But at least Selma made is up for one of the more prestigious Academy Awards.

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar was shut out of the major categories. The sci-fi epic did manage four nods, but the only Oscar nomination of note are for Visual Effects and Original Score.

Aside from Best Picture, the actor and actresses categories look to be especially competitive this year. Golden Globe Winners J.K. Simmons, Michael Keaton, Patricia Arquette, and Julianne Moore were, of course, nominees, leading to buzz that we may be due a repeat of the Globes in terms of winning actors and actresses.

Something that the Oscars may be having to live down is the fact that people of color were largely shut out of this years Academy Awards. Not only that, but Hollywood wasn’t a fan of young actors this year.

Meanwhile, 26-year-old actress Emma Stone is a nominee for Best Supporting Actress following her performance in Birdman. Meryl Streep was also awarded with an Oscar nomination for her work in Into The Woods.
