‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Adds Edward James Olmos In Recurring Role

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will feature a major new character when it returns in March, and that recurring character will be played by Edward James Olmos.

Marvel issued a press release on January 8 announcing Olmos’s addition to the cast of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ has just added another new face for its March return to ABC with Edward James Olmos!

“Olmos will play Robert Gonzales, whose debut this spring in ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘ will have massive repercussions for Director Coulson and his team.”

Newsarama believes that the character of Robert Gonzales was specifically created for the TV series, writing that, “An intital [sic] Google search didn’t turn up any Robert Gonzales in the Marvel Comic book universe.” SlashFilm also believes the character to be an original creation.

Newsarama added that Olmos joins another recent addition to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“Actor Blair Underwood is also scheduled to debut in a March episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as the estranged ex-husband of Melinda May, however it’s not known if his and Olmos’ characters will interact.”

And The Wrap noted that adding recognizable names to the series seems to be a trend.

“Olmos joins a growing list of talent to appear on Season 2 of ‘SHIELD,’ including Adrianne Palicki (Bobbi Morse, a.k.a. Mockingbird), Lucy Lawless (Agent Isabelle Hartley), Reed Diamond (Daniel Whitehall), Nick Blood (Lance Hunter), Henry Simmons (Alphonso ‘Mack’ Mackenzie), and Kyle MacLachlan (Skye’s father).

“Lawless, who co-starred with Olmos on ‘Battlestar Galactica,’ was killed off in the Season 2 debut.”

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. undoubtedly hopes to boost its ratings with the addition of Olmos to the cast. Marvel is also likely hoping that its limited series, Agent of Carter, will help with growing the S.H.I.E.L.D. brand, but right now people are comparing the two shows.

Initial ratings have come in for Agent Carter and Variety examined how they looked next to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“‘Marvel’s Agent Carter‘ opened to decent but unexceptional ratings for ABC on Tuesday night, placing second to the strong ‘NCIS‘ shows on CBS and outperforming most of this season’s ‘Agents of SHIELD‘ numbers, but losing steam in its second half.”

Meanwhile, Reed Tucker writing at the New York Post thinks that Agent Carter is better than Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

“As world-conquering as Marvel movies and characters are, for some reason, the much-hyped ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ show never seemed to catch on. Perhaps it was down to its initial episodes being pretty awful.

“By many accounts, the show has gotten better. But whatever happened with ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.,’ it certainly looks like the Powers That Be at Marvel have learned a few lessons from its misfire, and put that knowledge to use when crafting ‘Agent Carter.'”

The Inquisitr previously reported on what viewers can expect to see on the third episode of Agent Carter.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns with new episodes on Tuesday, March 3 at 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
