Warren Beatty’s Transgender Son Stephen Speaks About Leelah Alcorn’s Tragic Suicide
Warren Beatty and Annette Bening’s transgender son Stephen Ira is speaking out about Leelah Alcorn’s death.
Leelah Alcorn identified as a transgender, and due to her parents not letting her transition, she committed suicide. Stephen Ira is a 22-year-old activist who is very involved in the LGBT community. as he has been extremely proactive about taking down stereotypes and discrimination.
Ira took to Twitter after Alcorn’s death hit the news and became a national story. If going by the tweets, it looks like Stephen was trying to preserve the teen’s legacy in the wake of her suicide.
one of the last things leelah alcorn did in her life was tell another trans girl on tumblr that she was beautiful.

Stephen continued to tweet, and shamed Leelah’s parents for not letting her be who she needed to be in life. It started with a few retweets, and then Ira continued to tweet his opinion on parents that aren’t supportive of their children.
also get really confused when parents “mourn” when their kid comes out as trans

like, your kid didn’t die, they’re right there and they’re the exact same person

if anything, they’ve gained a kid now that their child feels comfortable enough to come out

I survived conversion therapy and transphobic abuse. I’m 22 and I live in New York City and I just put on my androgel. #RealLiveTransAdult

much of the therapy trans people are allowed to access is conversion therapy.

IF YOU CAN’T HANDLE HAVING A TRANS KID, DON’T HAVE KIDS. IF YOU CAN’T HANDLE HAVING A TRANS KID. DON’T HAVE KIDS.
— Stephen Ira (@supermattachine) December 30, 2014
the meaner but truer version of previous tweet: IF YOU CAN’T HANDLE A TRANS CHILD, YOU DO NOT DESERVE CHILDREN.

In 2013, a self-described poet and performance artist spoke out about the lack of healthcare trans people are given due to bias. Speaking in a PSA for the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, Ira said,
“I grew up outside of New York, but I’ve always known I’ve wanted to move here for the city’s vibrant artistic community. As a trans person, I would hope that I’d be welcomed, but many trans people aren’t because we don’t have the basic healthcare coverage that we need to survive.”
