Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter Expecting First Child

Benedict Cumberbatch and fiancee Sophie Hunter have a baby on the way. Cumberbatch’s publicist has confirmed that the couple are expecting their first child.

In a statement to the Guardian, Benedict’s publicist says that the couple are excited over the news. This is the first child for both Cumberbatch and Hunter.

“I am delighted to confirm that Benedict Cumberbatch and Sophie Hunter are expecting their first child. They are both over the moon.”

This is not the first time that Benedict has taken to the newspapers to release major news. Cumberbatch formally announced his engagement to Hunter in the UK Times last November. The Guardian also believes that the couple will marry this spring. Their wedding date has been pushed forward earlier than Benedict originally hinted at.

People Magazine reports that Sophie and Benedict were last seen together at the 26th Annual Palm Springs International Film Festival on Saturday. Sophie wore a long, flowing dress that could hide a baby bump. Keira Knightley, Benedict’s costar in The Imitation Game, is also expecting a child with her husband James Righton, as covered by the Inquisitr.

Cumberbatch talked to People in November about the possibility of a baby in the near future.

“Oh, my God. Well, my mother is also waiting for Cumberbabies.”

Wedding planning, though, has been put on hold during the awards season. Benedict told reporters at the Palm Springs festival that the television series Sherlock, which made Cumberbatch a worldwide celebrity, is his top priority. Currently, Benedict is filming the new season of Sherlock.

“My main focus is going to be on that, and then [awards season] is just sort of a wonderful burst of manic crazy fresh air in the midst of it all.”

Cumberbatch has earned best actor nominations for both the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards for his role as mathematician Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. Benedict is also expected to receive a Bafta nod.

“I’m geared up to have some fun! Any amount of award buzz or attention the film gets means that the people will engage with the story, so it means a lot for me.”
