PS Vita sales drop significantly in second week

The PlayStation Vita had fairly impressive two-day sales numbers in its first two days on the market, selling about 321,000 units in the first 48 hours. Surprisingly, it looks like sales have taken a pretty massive nosedive during the handheld’s second week on sale.

According to sales data listed by Japanese site 4Gamer, the PS Vita only managed to sell 72,479 units in its second week. During the same week, Sony’s PlayStation Portable outsold its successor, selling 101,121 units. The Nintendo 3DS continued its upwards trend, beating out all other consoles – handheld or otherwise – with 482,200 sales.

The PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo 3DS weren’t the only two devices to outsell the PlayStation Vita in its second week; Nintendo’s Wii sold 81,179 units, and the PlayStation 3 narrowly beat out the Vita with 75,943 sales.

The PlayStation Vita’s relatively poor performance in its second week doesn’t mean that the handheld is a failure by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a bit surprising. Sony’s products typically do very well on their home turf, but sales seem to have hit a snag, possibly due to consumers taking a wait-and-see approach.
