Racism is as much perception as it is reality. There is no proof that there was any offense or racism intended. Even someone of the same race can be racist against their own race. Therefore if someone perceives these pictures as racist then they must be a racist since they are the one perceiving them that way.

And I can't really talk, because I was (and still am) convinced that last year's Target “snow angels” ad was sexist.

It's unfortunate the amount of ignorance out there.

Many of the commenters on this and other websites have no idea what it's like to be born and raised in this country, and yet be forever known as “a foreigner”. This country's history has not been kind to people of asian descent, and many people choose to ignore or forget the facts: for a period of time, the Chinese race was exclusively banned by US law (wiki for “Chinese Exclusion Act”) and was the only racial group ever to suffer such an indignity; and people of Japanese ancestry, US citizens or not, were illegally incarcerated during WWII (wiki for “Executive Order 9066″).

I've lost count of the number of times I've been called “chink”, “gook”, “jap”, “nip”, “slanty eyes”, or “FOB”. Or how many times I've been told “go back to your own country”. Jeeez… I was born in Seattle.

Seeing something like this just makes me shake my head and wonder. As a country, we've come so far, but yet, we still have such a long way to go.

What's wrong with role playing, or imitation, if it's done in the right spirit, And it looks like it is. In fact, those times with the right friends you can trust can be the best therapy for healing the real times in one's memory when they were abused or hurt. As long as it's with your friends, not with bunch of no-name idiots or anti-defamation societies on a blog who want to read into a still photo all sorts of personal agendas.

The Asian guy is hanging with Miley Cyrus because he has no sense of his own rich culture and origins, so he obviously is an embarrassment to his parents, grandparents, and his race. He probably has lousy grades in high school and won't go to college and will end up on welfare or addicted to drugs in a country that is always keeping him down. Especially now that he has to explain why he's taking part in this photo.

The guy in the red shirt is terribly jealous of Miley because he's gay and has a thing for Miley's boyfriend. That's why he's mocking her boyfriend with the rabbit ears behind his head. And he's touching his mouth not because he's pretending to puke, but he's in the first moments of blowing a kiss to the camera, two very similar actions, when frozen by the shutter.
The girl with the long brown hair is desperate and weak-willed and can't even push her way into the photo. She does whatever Miley wants to do like a yes-girl, puppy dog, and has no life of her own outside of hanging with Miley. Her dad abandoned her mom at an early age and her mom has been doing some kind of low class job like dishwasher for far too long. She'll be pregnant by age 20 in a vain attempt to keep her boyfriend who's just using her for sex.
The underage drinker on the right with the modern version of a Maltese Cross hanging from his neck is obviously anti-semitic even though he loves Spielberg films. Well he loves them because he always roots for the Nazis in Indiana Jones, and others, even though they always lose. He will have several DUI's before the age of 21, luckily not putting anyone in a wheelchair for life, but he'll get off every time because his dad can hire the best lawyers (from you know which ethnic group).

i myself am asian. i was very surprised and certainly angered upon hearing about this. UNTIL i saw this picture just now. I mean, i guess there COULD be a possibility that miley cyrus and all her friends really WERE ridiculin asians by makin 'chinky eyes'. but from my point of view toward the picture, it looks to me as it was a spur of the moment thing. i mean, i felt RLY offended by the boy posing with a supposedly fobby peace sign too.

but considering there was an Asian boy with them in the picture, who is most likely a friend of theirs, these poses probably MEANT no harm, originally. If they were that racist they probably wouldnt have included an Asian in there.
