Chael Sonnen On CM Punk Signing With UFC: ‘I Don’t Know If He Knows What He’s Getting Into’

Former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen recently had former WWE, WCW, and TNA writer Vince Russo on his podcast, and they touched upon CM Punk signing with the UFC. While Russo thought that it was great, Sonnen, who is a friend of Punk’s, told Russo that he doesn’t know if CM Punk really knows what he’s getting himself into.

“I don’t know if [CM Punk] is an MMA guy. I know he’s an MMA fan. But when he trains, he’s either lifting weights, he’s doing some kind of cardio, or he’s practicing a sport known as jiu-jitsu. Now jiu-jitsu is an element of MMA, but that’s darn sure not MMA. I don’t know if he knows what he’s getting into.”

During CM Punk’s media tour several weeks ago, nearly every interviewer asked Punk if he knew what it was like to really get punched in the face. Punk laughed that question off every time it was asked, and insisted that he knows what it’s like to be punched in the face for real.

There’s only one famous fight story in CM Punk’s professional wrestling career, which took place back in 2004 when he got into a scuffle with Teddy Hart, who is the nephew of WWE legend Bret Hart, and, by most accounts, Hart got the better of Punk in the altercation.

UFC veteran Cole Miller thinks that CM Punk is going to surprise a lot of people with his fighting ability, and “Be able to kick some a**.” Miller expanded on why he believed that by saying the following.

“I think [CM Punk] will do very well. I don’t think he’s trying to make a 10-year career out of this. But he’s going to shake things up, whoop some a** and prove a lot of people wrong. I expect him to do very well against whoever they put up against him.”

“I think most MMA fighters don’t have any kind of ground game. Most of them aren’t good at all. Even in the UFC. There are plenty of exceptions, but when I say most, I mean more than 50 percent are nothing more than OK blue belts on the ground. I would rate CM Punk definitely above that.”

It seems like ever fighter, media member, and fan are split 50-50 on how CM Punk will do in the UFC. There are a lot of “MMA purists” out there who hope that CM Punk is beaten out of the UFC quickly, which is very possible. But it’s also possible that CM Punk could be in the UFC for a very, very long time.
