Post Office Holiday Hours: Is There Mail Delivery Christmas Eve And Christmas Day?

The U.S. Post Office is delivering packages on Christmas Eve, but all post office locations will be closing soon for those who still need to send out a last-minute gift or holiday cards. What time will the post office close their doors and will any mail be delivered on Christmas Day According to the U.S. Postal Service, most post office locations across the U.S. will close promptly at noon on December 24.

Letter carriers will be out all day Wednesday delivering packages, but there is no doubt that they are ready for a break, with only limited staff making deliveries of Priority Express packages on Christmas Day.

All post office locations will be closed on December 25 as it is one of ten federal holidays that the USPS is closed. However, there will be limited staff working on the holiday — Priority Express packages will be delivered on Christmas.

The holiday season has been an extremely busy one for postal workers this year, with Omaha.com reporting that the contract the USPS signed with Amazon has had delivery trucks on the road seven days a week during the holiday season.

“Right now, our parcel deliveries have gone over the top, and with the Amazon program we’re delivering seven days a week. Obviously, we don’t have enough [trucks] to cover our whole need…. This has solidified our ability to keep delivering parcels on time.”

What about UPS and FedEx deliveries? Both delivery services will be dropping off packages at homes and businesses throughout the day on December 24, but there are some limitations.

FedEx reports that it will be delivering only Express and Ground packages with limited service hours. No home delivery or freight packages will be delivered on Christmas Eve and there will be no deliveries of any kind on Christmas Day.

UPS will be open on December 24 if you need to send out a package (call ahead for hours) and will be delivering packages scheduled for home and business delivery during Christmas Eve Day. All UPS locations will be closed on Christmas and only UPS Express Critical will be available for delivery.

The U.S. Post Office, UPS, and FedEx aren’t the only businesses that will be closed on Christmas Day. Most retailers including Walmart(which only closes one day per year), Target, malls, and most supermarkets will be closed all day on December 25. Many popular restaurants will be closed, although there are several national chain restaurants that will be open for those who don’t want to cook on Christmas.

Amidst all of the holiday closures, there is still a chance to pick up a last-minute gift if the one you ordered online didn’t get delivered on time. Try a nearby 24-hour CVS or 7-11 for a small gift, candy or an always-welcome gift card.

The U.S. Post Office, UPS, and FedEx will all re-open for business on Friday, December 26.
