2014 Christmas Hours: What Stores And Restaurants Are Open On Christmas Eve And Christmas?


Think you may end up needing a last minute gift or just don’t feel like cooking again after burning the meal for Christmas Eve or Christmas 2014? Even though there are many people that feel all stores and restaurants should be closed for the holiday and the day before, more and more are going along with the trend of being open every single day of the year.

Traveling to visit relatives on Christmas is a common trend, and so is forgetting a gift for someone. AL.com reports that many stores are extending their Christmas Eve 2014 hours for those last-minute gifts and forgetful minds.

Unfortunately, there still aren’t all that many open on Christmas Day itself. So many people do late shopping still, and most of the money comes into the till in the week before Christmas.

“One survey on holiday shopping patterns showed that 54 percent of those polled do the bulk of their shopping in the week leading up to Christmas.”

Below is a full list of many popular stores and their hours for Christmas Eve, Christmas, and if they’re just totally closed for the holiday.

Christmas Eve hours:

  • Albertsons: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • CVS: Open until 10 p.m.
  • Kroger: Open until 6 p.m.
  • Publix: Open until 7 p.m.
  • Rite Aid: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Walgreens: Close at midnight
  • Whole Foods: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Academy Sports + Outdoors: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Barnes & Noble: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Best Buy: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • BJ’s Wholesale: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Costco: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Dillards: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • GameStop: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Hobby Lobby: 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
  • JCPenney: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Kmart: 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

For those that need to pick up an extra cranberry sauce or extra turkey on Christmas Day 2014, there are some stores with serious holiday hours. Based on years past, these are the locations you can get groceries if needed.

  • CVS: 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Fresh & Easy: 6 a.m. to 12 a.m.
  • Rite Aid: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Walgreens: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

If anyone just doesn’t feel like cooking, then there are a number of restaurant options open on Christmas Day 2014. Mind you, there aren’t a ton so there is a chance you could end up like the family in A Christmas Story.

Now, you will need to call ahead to your nearby location and make sure that their hours are the same or if they’re open at all. Many restaurants are franchised out and the owners don’t necessarily follow the same rules, regulations, and hours that others do, as the Victoria Advocate suggests.

If you’re looking for a United States Post Office location, most lobbies are planning on closing by 12 p.m. local time on Christmas Eve. They will run regular mail delivery on Christmas Eve, and be closed on Christmas Day 2014.
