Madonna’s Bizarre ‘Dat Ass’ Christmas Wreath: Is She Getting Wackier With Age?

Madonna has been known as a “material girl” for many years, even decades, and her fans have come to expect a lot from her, especially at Christmas time.

So when Gawker broke a story today, showing Madonna’s only visible Christmas decoration, a sole wreath on the front gate of her property with dangling gold letters, reading “Dat Ass,” many fans were less than impressed.

The fact is that Christmas started badly for Madonna anyway after she had an entire album’s worth of new songs hacked and released prematurely. Perhaps the lone and rather bizarre Christmas decoration is just a sign of her current mood and state of mind.

In speaking about the leak of her songs to Rolling Stone, the Like a Virgin star said she had planned to release the new tracks in her 13th album, Rebel Heart, in the spring of 2015.

But after 13 of those tracks were released by hackers, Madonna decided, by way of a response, to put six of the tracks up for official sale on iTunes and other online digital stores, saying,

“I was hoping to release my new single ‘Living for Love’ on Valentine’s Day with the rest of the album coming in the spring. I would prefer my fans to hear completed versions of some of the songs instead of the incomplete tracks that are circulating. Please consider these six songs as an early Christmas gift.”

Back to the “Dat Ass” wreath, Gawker commenters had lots of opinions to share about their view of the decoration, like, for example, James_from_Cambridge who posted,

“As a gay man I’m not allowed to hate her but still, she’s getting annoying. She’s just so desperate to not age and she’s fighting it with everything she’s got but she’d probably be happier if she just gave in, had her dinners at 4 PM and went to bed at 5 PM. There’s no way in hell this woman, who’s always trying to convince us of her spirituality and peace of mind, is in any meaningful way happy. But still…I love her music, pre-2000. She made perfect pop music before she became so age-obsessed and weird.”

Other users expressed their dislike of the wreath too. User jerry-netherland wrote,

“While many aspire to a perpetually youthful exterior (few more than she), most people try to grow up emotionally and psychologically. Madge, however, does not seem to realize how unattractive juvenile behavior is from a 56 year old; just undoes all the costly plastic surgery. Poor little rich her.”

Madonna has built a career on controversy and it will be interesting if she decides to explain the exact meaning of her Christmas wreath.
