Reese Witherspoon to Star in West Memphis Three Movie, ‘Devil’s Knot’

Atom Egoyan has started casting for his movie about the West Memphis Three called “Devil’s Knot,” and he already has one big star attached to the film. Reese Witherspoon has just signed on to play Pam Hobbs, the mother of one of the three 8-year-old boys who were murdered in 1993.

Egoyan’s movie, “The Devil’s Knot,” is based on a book by journalist Mara Leveritt called “Devil’s Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three.”

The movie will tell the story of Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, who were arrested shortly after three boys were murdered in Arkansas. Echols, Baldwin, and Misskelley, who were referred to collectively as the West Memphis Three, were jailed for nearly two decades for the murder of three boys in Arkansas.

Numerous celebrities, including Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder, and Peter Jackson, came out in support of the West Memphis Three as the evidence that landed them in jail was questionable.

Depp said:

“I firmly believe Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley are totally innocent. It was a need for swift justice to placate the community.”

The West Memphis Three were recently released from prison this August when their convictions were overturned.

Etoygan’s movie doesn’t have a release date yet but it’s expected to come out in 2012. Witherspoon is currently the only star attached to the movie.

    Many people believe the WM3 were guilty as charged. They were found guilty by a unanimous jury the first time. They plead guilty instead of waiting for a trial the second time.

    It would be better if a movie was made about Diana Moore or Steve Branch, two other parents of the murdered children. They both still believe the 3 are guilty.

    All of this is from court records or articles.

    Misskelley confessed three separate times, once with his lawyer present. Misskelley also told two other people about the crime before he was arrested. Baldwin told someone else he committed the crimes. Echols was seen in muddy clothes near the crime scene. Echols is reported to have either told or bragged about the crime to four people before he was arrested.

    Echols also had a history of psychiatric treatment. His reported actions included brutally killing a dog, starting fires at his school, threatening to kill his teachers and parents and stating he liked to drink blood. He talked about getting his girlfriend pregnant, then using the baby as a human sacrifice. He claimed to be possessed by a spirit and to converse with demons. (from exhibit 500 court documents).

    their convictions were, unfortunately, not overturned. This is an untrue fact in your article.
