New Species Of Angel-Like Deep Sea Fish Caught On Tape, Discovered By Accident [Video]

Scientists discovered a new species of fish that is angelic in appearance. The new species, which has yet to be named, is the deepest living fish ever discovered.

The new species of fish was discovered by complete accident. According to the Los Angeles Times, the video shows tubes that were part of a sea floor sampling mission. The camera was supposed to be filming the core collecting process, but scientists got an extra surprise when the mysterious fish appeared in the camera’s view.

The sea floor sampling video took place at the Mariana Trench, the deepest place on Earth, in November. The Schmidt Ocean Institute uploaded the video to YouTube on December 17. The institute notes that the fish was found at a depth of over five miles.

“Video of a newly discovered species is now the world’s deepest known fish recorded at 8,143 m (5.06 miles) depth. The fish has a novel body form that has not been seen before. It stunned scientists because in other trenches, there is only one fish species at this depth–a snailfish; this fish is really different from any other deep-sea fish that scientists have ever seen.”

The fish has white “wings” that are somewhat translucent in appearance. It can be seen gliding across the water with its wings in full span. The unique fish moves gracefully around the sampling tubes before disappearing from view.

What do you think would be a great name for the newly discovered deep sea species? Should its unique features be used in the naming process?
