American Kennel Club Will Recognize Four New Breeds

The American Kennel Club will recognize four new breeds beginning January 2015. The Bergamasco, Boerboel, Cirneco dell’Etna, and Spanish Water Dog have met all requirements set forth by the AKC, and will be allowed to participate in AKC-sanctioned competitions and shows.

As reported by ABC News, per AKC requirements, all four breeds have “a minimum number of dogs geographically distributed throughout the U.S., as well as an established breed club of responsible owners and breeders.”

With the addition of the new breeds, the AKC will have a total of 184 recognized breeds in 2015. Founded in 1884, the American Kennel Club is dedicated to “promoting the sport of purebred dogs and breeding for type and function.” According to their mission statement, the organization also stresses responsible breeding standards and the “health and well-being of all dogs.”

Each year, the AKC sanctions more than 15,000 events, including dog shows and competitions. The organization also maintains a registry of purebred dogs and provides resources for dog owners and breeders.

The American Kennel Club’s four new breeds will begin competing in 2015. Although the breeds have met the AKC’s requirements for recognition, they each have distinct characteristics and personalities.

The Bergamasco is a larger dog, with a thick wooly coat. As their fur eventually “sets” into thick mats, Bergamasco dogs do not require brushing and they rarely shed. Originating in Iran, Bergamascos are sheep herders, who are “highly intelligent,” loyal, and very social.

The Boerboel is also a larger dog, with a short, sleek, shiny coat. Like the Bergamasco, Boerboels are highly intelligent working dogs. Although they are strong and muscular, with “strong watch and guard-dog instincts,” Boerboels are also quite playful.

As reported by Dog Breed Info, Boerboels form a close bond with their owner. However, they can be aggressive toward strangers. As they are strong working dogs, Boerboels need a great deal of exercise and are not recommended for apartment living.

The Cirneco dell’Etna is a medium sized dog, with a short, sleek, and shiny coat. As they are hunting dogs, Cirneco dell’Etnas are slender and agile with strong senses. Originating in Sicily, Cirneco dell’Etnas are hard-working and independent. However, they are also affectionate and make great pets.

Spanish Water Dogs are medium sized, with thick, curly, wooly, fur. As they are hunting and herding dogs, Spanish Water Dogs are agile, strong, and loyal. Although they need a great deal of mental and physical stimulation, Spanish Water Dogs make great family pets.

The American Kennel Club’s four new breeds are distinct in their appearance and behavior. However, they have all met the standards to be recognized by the prestigious organization.
