Iceland to get world’s first gay leader

Johanna Sigurdardottir, a former air hostess, is expected to be sworn in as Iceland’s Prime Minister by the end of the week, making her the first openly gay leader of any country in history.

Unfortunately for Sigurdardottir, the circumstances behind her ascent to Prime Minister couldn’t possibly be any worse. The Iceland Government, like the local economy collapsed after protesters demanded change. Iceland is technically bankrupt, with the one prosperous but remote county facing severe shortages as foreign capital completely dries up, and the local currency continued to dive.

According to the Guardian, Sigurdardottir, previously the Minister for Social Affairs, lives with her partner, Jonina Leosdottir, a journalist and playwright. The couple were married in a civil ceremony in 2002.
