Floyd Mayweather Says He’d Be A Multibillionaire If He Was White

Floyd Mayweather is worth a crazy amount of money, but the controversial Money Man boxer says that he could be worth even more. Floyd Mayweather says he could be a billionaire. The only thing standing in his way: the color of his skin.

Mayweather – known as much for his outside-the-ring antics as he is for what he does inside the ring – sat down recently for an interview with Fight Hype. Over the course of 20 minutes, Mayweather gives a lot of insight on his thoughts about boxing, money, Oscar De La Hoya, and Manny Pacquiao. He also lets loose on boxing promoter Bob Arum, and the way that Arum does business. Mayweather gets interesting, though, when it comes to the topic of who’s making what kinds of money in boxing and who can still draw fans in. [h/t: Complex]

“What’s so crazy,” Mayweather says, “is the last time I checked, I hold the record for pay-per-view. I hold the record for highest grossing gate. I hold the record for making the most money in one night, and the list goes on.”

Mayweather was discussing the possible reasons behind boxing promoters choosing other boxers for pay-per-view events over him. After a bit, Mayweather got to what he really thought was behind those choices.

“When you think about what’s going on in the world today as far as racism, it’s a lot of racism that goes on in the sport of boxing,” Mayweather said. “Because if I was a white, American fighter with the same aura, the same style, the same pizzaz, I’d be a multibillionaire. Multibillionaire.”

The interviewer didn’t push back on that notion, and Mayweather simply continued, although he didn’t seem to have a particular direction after the multibillionaire comments.

“So when you look at what goes on in Ferguson, what goes on in New York City, in America, in today’s time,” Mayweather said, “I try not to get into people’s business, because I don’t want anyone in my business.”

Taking a bit of a peek into Floyd’s business, Forbes estimated that Mayweather made $105 million over the year leading up to June 2014, due to those record-setting pay-per-view fights Mayweather boasted of in the video. A September 2013 fight against Canelo Alvarez pulled in roughly $200 million in total revenue, and Mayweather pulled in $32 million for a May fight with Marcos Maidana.

Mayweather may have pulled in more than $420 million in total earnings over his career. Some observers estimate his total net worth at around $200 million. But is Mayweather right? Could it be more if he was white?
