New On Netflix In January — Every Episode Of ‘Friends,’ Plus ‘Mean Girls’ Returns, And More
Fans of the now-classic sitcom Friends will be thrilled with the new Netflix offerings in January. Starting right on New Year’s Day, Netflix streaming service will offer subscribers every single episode of the beloved series — all 236 of them from the show’s 10 seasons — for nothing more than the price of a monthly streaming subscription.
Until January 1, devotees of the timeless sitcom would have been required to purchase a boxed set of DVDs, first issued in 2006, which still retails for more than $200 — though it can be found on sale for as low as $70. But that’s still the price of nearly nine months of Netflix.
Friends ran on NBC from 1994 until 2004, and launched the careers of Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox, and Lisa Kudrow, as well as Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer.
And on the subject of launching careers, the cult classic 2004 comedy Mean Girls makes another appearance on the Netflix streaming service, also becoming available to view on New Year’s Day.
The edgy teen flick established its lead actress, Lindsay Lohan, as major star at the age of just 18 — perhaps a bit too young given her subsequent issues. The movie also features the film debut of Amanda Seyfried as well as early, memorable roles for Rachel McAdams, Lizzy Caplan — and Tina Fey, who also wrote the screenplay for Mean Girls.
Other highlights of Netflix new offerings in January include the 1971 Oscar-winning thriller The French Connection, often considered the greatest cop movie ever made; The 1952 John Wayne classic The Quiet Man, featuring “The Duke” in an uncharacteristically romantic turn; the biting 1999 satire Election, starring Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick, and directed by Nebraska’s Alexander Payne; and the entertaining horror sequel Jeepers Creepers 2.
