5 Seconds Of Summer Guys Dress Like Grandparents, Even They Don’t Know Why

It seems as though the guys of Australian punk rock band 5 Seconds of Summer are becoming known for their wacky antics. Along with a nude photo scandal involving bassist Calum Hood, the members of 5 Seconds of Summer have even had run-ins with male strippers hired by fans to dance for the band. This time around, things have gotten a lot less racy and a little more elderly. All four members of 5 Seconds of Summer dressed up as old folks for the Jingle Ball red carpet event.

According to Twist Magazine, Ashton Irwin, Calum Hood, Luke Hemmings, and Michael Clifford showed up with wigs, fake mustaches and walking canes to pose for photos and even sit down for an interview. Ashton and Calum adorned some grandpa costumes, while Michael and Luke went as grannies — dresses, purses and all. According to the Daily Mail, while in their old folks costumes, 5 Seconds of Summer sat down to talk with Hot 99.5, which hosted the Jingle Ball. The costumes were described as a “prank” but the guys of 5 Seconds of Summer seemed about as clueless to the point of the prank as everyone watching.

“You may be wondering why we’re doing this and the answer is we don’t know,” said 5 Seconds of Summer’s drummer Ashton Irwin.

But Ashton did go on to provide a better explanation for the granny gag, saying, “We wanted to mix it up, this is the last radio show of the year and we wanted to do something fun so we dressed up.” So basically, 5 Seconds of Summer dressed as grandparents for the fun of dressing as grandparents.

After discussing the costumes, the guys of 5 Seconds of Summer went on to compare the severity of each other’s flatulence while on tour. It’s this fun and careless attitude that has brought 5 Seconds of Summer to international fame, and also contributed to the energetic sound of their debut self-titled album, 5 Seconds of Summer.

After the interview, the members of 5 Seconds of Summer shed their grandma and grandpa outfits for their traditional punk clothes and performed for the Jingle Ball crowd.
