WWE News: WWE Set To Bring Back The European Championship In Place Of United States Title?

WWE has been full of surprises lately and one big one could be coming soon. WWE has had several United States Champions since they bought out WCW years ago. The U.S. Title was really introduced to help out WWE SmackDown, as a secondary title was needed for the show that was equal to the Intercontinental Championship based on WWE RAW every week. In the time of the brand split, both titles were needed.

For some time, there has been a thought of dropping the U.S. Title or merging it with the I.C. Title. Now, there might be an interesting case regarding the title. WWE could be bringing back an old WWE favorite in its place.

In 2002, RVD and Jeff Hardy went at it in a ladder match on an episode of WWE RAW. Jeff was the European Champion and Rob Van Dam was the I.C. Champion. The ladder match took place to unify the titles. Whoever won would have their title as the representative for WWE. As we know by now, RVD won and the European Title was removed from WWE programming.

Now, 12 years later, it could be coming back in place of the WWE U.S. Title.

On Saturday, WWE Diva Lana posted this on her Twitter page.

WWE Euro

As you can see, it is the WWE European Championship. What is interesting is that it has the new WWE logo and name on it. This would be weird for WWE to make just for a random pic. This was the real deal however, and it appears to be a clue to something interesting. Lana even removed the post from Twitter which could indicate that she was hinting at the European Title returning, but wasn’t supposed to.

Rusev, the man Lana manages, will defend his U.S. Title against Jack Swagger at the TLC PPV. It can be assumed that Rusev will win and then change the U.S. Title to the European Title soon after. This would, in turn, remove all former WCW belts from TV. We saw earlier this year that WWE got rid of what people call “the big gold belt.” This is obviously the World Heavyweight Title.

WWE merged the WWE And World Heavyweight Titles into the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. WWE then made up a new title so that title holders wouldn’t have to carry around both title belts. Brock Lesnar, the current champion, is the first to hold the new WWE World Heavyweight Title.

With the removal of the U.S. Title and addition of the European Title, WWE would have all of it’s original titles. This would be better than removing a secondary title from TV. If the I.C. and U.S. Title merged, it would take away an option for mid-card wrestlers. The European Title would be a build up title that would be a bit lesser than the I.C. Title, but it would be a popular move by WWE as the European Title was always seen an interesting title for WWE. Rusev would be an interesting first champion for sure.
