New ‘Criminal Minds’ Spinoff Pilot In The Works

CBS is planning to attempt another Criminal Minds spinoff.

The first attempt did not go as well as planned. Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior had a decent cast but couldn’t last beyond 13 episodes. Among the cast members were Forest Whitaker (Platoon, Phone Booth), Janeane Garofalo (Dogma, Mystery Men), Michael Kelly (Now You See Me, Changeling), Beau Garrett (Tron: Legacy, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer), Matt Ryan (Flypaper, Constantine) and Kirsten Vangness (Criminal Minds, In My Sleep).

Vangness portrayed her character, Garcia, on both the original Criminal Minds and the spinoff. Suspect Behavior lasted from 2010 until 2011, but simply could not pick up any steam.

As with the last attempt, the spinoff pilot will air during an episode of the original Criminal Minds. This kind of technique in introducing a spinoff is actually quite common. Some examples would be The Originals from The Vampire Diaries, The Flash from Arrow and NCIS: New Orleans from NCIS.

There is very little known about the new Criminal Minds spinoff as of yet.

What we do know is that it will focus on a specific division within the FBI. Like Criminal Minds focuses on the FBI’s Analysis Unit, the spinoff will focus on a division of the FBI charged with helping American citizens who find themselves abroad and in trouble.

Criminal Minds’ executive producer, writer and showrunner, Erica Messer, will be writing the pilot episode for the spinoff.

Messer was not new to TV writing with Criminal Minds. She has also been credited, by IMDB, as a writer of four episodes on The O.C., two episodes of Charmed, and three episodes of Alias.

Erica Messer will also be executive producing the Criminal Minds spinoff alongside Mark Gordon (Criminal Minds, Grey’s Anatomy) and Nick Pepper, both belong to the Mark Gordon Company.

There have been no casting decisions made for the Criminal Minds spinoff as of yet. Rumors are circulating, however, that the timely breakup of Hotch (Thomas Gibson) and Beth (Bellamy Young) is a little suspicious. It’s leaving fans to wonder if Bellamy Young will be one of the actors featured in the spinoff. Despite the rumors, it seems unlikely since Young is currently portraying a long-running character on Scandal.

Other rumors indicate that there will be an entirely new cast for the spinoff and that even Vangness’ fan-favorite Garcia won’t be making an appearance.

What, and who, would you hope to see on the Criminal Minds spinoff?
