‘Vampire Diaries’ Spoilers: Kai’s Plan For Elena And Enzo And Matt’s ‘Interesting Relationship’

It wasn’t exactly a merry Christmas in the Vampire Diaries midseason finale this year – but would you expect anything else from this show? – despite some attempts to make it so. Caroline’s mother tried to bring Christmas to Caroline’s dorm room since she couldn’t return home to Mystic Falls, Kai organized a family reunion for the holidays and Bonnie set up a tree by herself in the Mystic Falls parking lot in the prison world.

But this being The Vampire Diaries, as great as that sounds on paper, nothing ended well. Caroline’s mother collapsed, and a trip to the hospital revealed that she has a brain tumor – and there is nothing that anyone (doctors or vampires) can do. Kai’s family reunion was just so he could get Jo to take her magic back in order to complete the merge. Bonnie burned the tree at the end of the night after she spent “Christmas” (technically in May) alone since the others haven’t found a way to rescue her yet.

Thanks to Kai sucking up all the magic from the Travelers’ spell, Mystic Falls is no longer a vampire-free zone. As the midseason finale ended, Elena headed to Damon’s so they could chat about their horrible days, but Kai found her first and cloaked her so Damon couldn’t see her when he answered the door.

Executive producer Caroline Dries told TV Guide that this means that Kai is even more dangerous.

“It takes away that border that has been the bane of our existence and it allows our people to come home, which was their goal, at least for Caroline and a few others. It helps create a more unified bond that people can sleep in their own bed and hang out at the Salvatore house, but what it does for the mythology is now Kai is supercharged and can kind of do whatever he wants, which makes him the most violent villain in town.”

But why did he take Elena? Dries told E! Online that it is about getting back at Damon after the time they spent together in the prison world at the beginning of The Vampire Diaries Season 6.

“He has a chip on his shoulder for Elena and Damon, but especially Damon having been stranded by him in the prison world. So he feels like getting at Damon via Elena is the perfect revenge. But he also has a more pointed reason for having her…. But having sucked up all that magic from Mystic Falls has repercussions even for him. He needs Elena’s help with that.”

Kai isn’t their only problem at the moment, as Enzo is still determined to bring more misery to Stefan’s life, and now he has Matt since the human was trying to kill him by crossing into Mystic Falls just as Kai got rid of that pesky spell. Dries told the Hollywood Reporter that this will be the “B/C-story” in Episode 11, with Kai the focus, but it will “progress, slowly but surely.”

“He needs to employ Matt to get what he wants. And he’s going to come at Stefan from an unexpected angle. And, ultimately, he and Matt are going to have an interesting relationship. And it’s going to reveal a couple extra layers of Stefan we haven’t seen before.”

The promo for the show’s return in January, which you can watch below, is about Kai and Enzo’s plans. Stefan tells Enzo his “big secret,” while Kai brings Elena back to high school. It looks like Damon is right and he “should have gouged his little eyes out when [he] had the chance.”

As the Inquisitr previously reported, series star Paul Wesley has teased that there’s a big death coming up that will “break the people’s hearts,” and after the Vampire Diaries midseason finale, it looks like that could be Sheriff Forbes, since vampire blood may be able to cure life-threatening wounds, but it can’t do anything to cure cancer.

The Vampire Diaries Season 6 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on the CW.
