The beloved Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder is a birthday boy today, and he has made a video to tell fans what his birthday wish is.
Born on December 8, 1978 in the small town of Covington, Louisiana, the beloved actor is celebrating his 36 years upon this Earth with a special request for all of his fans and friends. What is his birthday wish? What could possibly be the right gift for a wildly popular vampire? How about a little charity and compassion with maybe a side of sustainability thrown in?
Ian Somerhalder took to social media to make his birthday wish this year with a video appeal asking that instead of giving him material gifts for his birthday, he would like to see others support the work of his charitable foundation, The Ian Somerhalder Foundation, and to help make the world a better place.
“Thank you so much for all of the birthday wishes! I am very grateful to have all of you as a part of my family! If you were thinking about sending me a gift, please consider giving $10 to the Ian Somerhalder Foundation.”
The star celebrated his 32nd birthday four years ago by establishing The Ian Somerhalder Foundation which “aims to empower, educate and collaborate with people and projects to positively impact the planet and its creatures.” Marking the four year anniversary for the foundation is another thing for Ian to celebrate today, and as he shows in the video that he posted on facebook, it is something near and dear to his heart.
Ian Somerhalder has been a vocal activist for positive change, especially when it comes to the environment and caring for animals. In fact, he once told US Magazine that if he wasn’t an actor, he’d be a marine biologist. Just last month, he flew back to his home state to attend an open meeting on a proposed fracking project in Louisiana that could threaten the environment, as well as the local water supply.
Somerhalder is also a big animal lover, and his passion is clear whenever he s speaks on the issues. As he told US Magazine last year, he “cofounded the IS Foundation in 2010 to empower and educate our youth.”
Ian also went on to add that he is deeply commented to sustainability for the future.
“I wish we could all understand that sustainability, education, innovation and compassion are essential for progress on our planet.”
