Bad Parenting: Did Father’s Punishment Of Son Go Too Far?

Bad parenting examples are all over the internet these days, many times from people who think they’ve invented a grand, ingenious way of keeping their little ones on the straight and narrow.

What happened to the days of handling punishments in the privacy of one’s own home and keeping it between parent and child? That’s what many of the outraged viewers of the video you’re about to see want to know.

Here’s the setup.

The dad in this video catches his son stealing, and so instead of punishing him in a traditional way, he forces the boy to hold books over his head while videoing him.

After that, he posted the video to YouTube, so the boy’s friends could see. Thus far, the video has racked up more than 30,000 views on the WorldStarHipHop Exclusives channel.

If you are at a location where you can watch video, have a look.

For those of you who don’t have that luxury, here’s the gist of what happens after you click play.

The boy is crying from the very beginning. Not quietly either — screaming, crocodile tears. What bothered many about this was the sheer level of glee the father seems to take in the boy’s misery.

“Your whole crew gonna see this, you know that, right?” he says at one point, amid pleas from the young man not to show the video.

At another point, he even zooms in on the child’s anguished face.

“Look at the sweat on his face. This is a workout, boy.”

Why did the dad choose this method of punishment, and is it bad parenting?

To the first question, he explains himself.

“Since we can’t whoop our kids no d*** more, I figure we got to find some way to get discipline in these kids… Next time you gonna steal, you better steal some knowledge.”

He also forces the boy to recite the following.

“I will not disrespect my Mama, my Daddy, my teachers, and nobody else,” the child repeats through tears. “I’m gonna hold these books until they become a part of me!”

Commenters were not happy.

“yes yes good. the CORRECT way to punish your child is to humiliate and demean them while also putting them through physical pain. i’m sure he will most certainly grow up to be a confident, trusting young man & will thank his father for all the humiliation & dehumanization he is likely to go through”

“to h*** with talking to them – hurt them!”

“Good parenting? Sorry this is cruel and unusual punishment. Once again this is why discipline needs to be done in private. I can see CPS having a problem with this. This is between you and your son, no reason to humilate him in front of the world. And he could damage his muscles like this.”

Do you think commenters are right to call this bad parenting, or did the boy get the discipline he needed?
