Washington Redskins Hit Rock Bottom, Shutout By Rams

The Washington Redskins are what the kids these days call a “hot mess.” The quarterback situation with Robert Griffin III has not only been a distraction, but the team has seemingly given up, allowing the equally lowly St. Louis Rams to come into the Redskins home at FedEx Field and shut them out, 24-0. The loss, the Redskins fifth in a row, drops the team to 3-10 on the season, and with rookie head coach Jay Gruden benching quarterback RGIII in favor of Colt McCoy, his brand new head coaching job could be in serious jeopardy.

As the Inquisitr has previously reported, Gruden is not sold on Griffin as a leader and effectively wants him out. Owner Dan Snyder, a known RGIII loyalist, is reportedly not happy with Gruden’s decision. Even RGIII’s Redskins teammates have called out their quarterback, anonymously revealing that Griffin has lost the team’s confidence and blasting him for his prima donna attitude.

In today’s game against the Rams (5-7), RGIII came back into the game late in the fourth quarter after the starter McCoy, who proved to be ineffective for most of the game, tweaked his neck just before the two-minute warning. Griffin took a sack in his limited play time, further highlighting his inability to grasp this offense and to be a leader on the field.

The fans, who are some of the most loyal in all sports, have seemingly turned their backs on this Washington Redskins team. It was revealed this week that tickets for today’s game were selling for the price of a cup of coffee, as reported by ESPN. If anything can get the attention of embattled Redskins owner Dan Snyder, it is a hit in the wallet. How long before mass changes are made within the Redskins organization? How long can Dan Snyder sit back and let his team be ridiculed by his team’s own fans?

And on top of all this mess looms the shadow of the Redskins very name. Many groups argue that the Redskins name is a slur towards Native Americans. Snyder has been on the defensive all year, trying to protect his team and its mascot. The U.S. Trademark office pulled the Redskins trademark in June over the controversy, and even with personalities like Hall of Fame tight end and former Bears and Saints head coach Mike Ditka, and Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey speaking out in favor of the name, the team’s ugly play draws even more attention to the organization. It’s hard to argue that the Washington Redskins are a source of pride for Native Americans when they are one of the worst teams in the league.

Today’s loss to the Rams — a shut out, no less — just adds to the hot mess that is the Washington Redskins. The coaching staff is on the brink of total turnover, the players have no faith in each other, and the losses are mounting. This is rock bottom, and the Washington Redskins are there, and possibly will be for years to come.

What do you think about the Washington Redskins? Are they the worst team in the NFL? Is RGIII and/or head coach Jay Gruden done? Will they ever change their name? Sound off in the comments below.
