Will ‘Transformers: Age Of Extinction’ Be Nominated For Best Picture Of The Year?

Even though it was panned by critics and moviegoers, Transformers: Age of Extinction brought in more than $1 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. And with Oscar season getting underway, Paramount Pictures has submitted the summer blockbuster for consideration in numerous categories, including Best Picture.

According to its official website, the studio also submitted Michael Bay for consideration in the Best Director category and Ehren Kruger for Best Adapted Screenplay. Other categories in which Paramount is campaigning for Transformers: Age of Extinction include visual effects, sound, original score, and cinematography. None of the film’s stars were submitted for acting considerations.

Along with Transformers: Age of Extinction, Paramount is also doing Best Picture campaigns for Noah, Men, Women & Children, Interstellar, Selma, and The Gambler.

The Transformers franchise is familiar to Oscar nominations, but those usually come in the technical categories. According to IMDb, the first film was nominated for sound mixing, sound editing, and visual effects. Revenge of the Fallen was nominated for sound mixing, and Dark of the Moon was nominated in the same three fields as the first Transformers.

When it comes to awards season, the Transformers franchise tends to find itself nominated in numerous categories for the Razzies, which gives awards to the worst films of the year. At the 2010 ceremony, Revenge of the Fallen received the awards for Worst Picture and Worst Screenplay, while Bay won for Worst Director.

With the year drawing to a close, many critics are starting to release their best and worst of 2014 lists. Entertainment Weekly’s Chris Nashawaty is one of those people, and he placed Transformers: Age of Extinction at number two.

“With the fate of the world at stake, you should at least care who wins in the end. Me, I was just relieved the d**n thing was over.”

If Transformers: Age of Extinction does get nominated for any technical categories, it will most likely be pitted against other summer blockbusters. As previously reported by the Inquisitr, some of the other films that could receive Oscar nominations in the field of visual effects include Guardians of the Galaxy, Godzilla, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The nominations for the 87th Annual Academy Awards will be revealed on January 15, 2015, according to the Los Angeles Times. The ceremony will be held on February 22 at the Dolby Theatre.
