Nicki Minaj Plays Virgin Mary, Beyonce In ‘SNL’ Hip-Hop Nativity Scene

Nicki Minaj got a chance to perform her own music, play Virgin Mary, and imitate Beyonce all during the SNL broadcast.

The Young Money rapper was originally brought on-board as the musical guest for this weekend’s episode of Saturday Night Live.

However, Nicki Minaj found a way to showcase her own talent when it comes to comic timing and impersonations.

The sketch “Hip-Hop Nativity” basically was a retelling of the traditional nativity story of Jesus’ birth that many people already know — with a twist.

Instead of using actual actors to play the roles, “Hip Hop Nativity” turns the classic story into a bit of a hip-hop musical and allows famous singers and musicians to play the roles in their own special way.

Rihanna (Sasheer Zamata) was the narrator/shining star. Eminem (Taran Killam), Riff Raff (James Franco), and Rick Ross (Kenan Thompson) were the three wise men. Beyonce (Nicki Minaj) and Justin Bieber (Kate McKinnon) played Joseph and Mary. Last, but not least, Jay Pharoah nailed an impersonation of Kanye West playing Jesus/Yeezus.

Most Saturday Night Live fans and critics already expected great performances from the SNL cast — especially since most of them have impersonated those particular artists before.

However, Nicki Minaj was able to pull off a portrayal of Beyonce that usually SNL alum Maya Rudolph is brought on-board to do herself, so it was a bit of a surprise.

Nicki Minaj nailed the Beyonce look, though — long hair extensions, revealing outfit, bold stance, and even her manner of speaking/singing.

Joseph (Justin Bieber) apologizes to Mary (Beyonce) for not being able to take her somewhere else to have her baby besides a manger filled with animals. Nicki Minaj responds to that apology in a way that only Beyonce could.

“No, no, no. This moment is not about me. Let everybody have their moment. This moment is about my baby boy. Behold…’he woke up like this.’ Flawless. One day, he’ll turn water into wine and we’ll all be ‘drunk in love.'”

During the Weekend Update segment of the show, Nicki Minaj also had a chance to spoof reality star Kim Kardashian by discussing the “truth” about her Paper magazine photos.

Based on the reactions posted on Twitter since the episode first aired, it seems as if many people felt that Nicki Minaj did a great job on SNL this week.
