Patton Oswalt Cosby Comments, If True, Show What Cowards Comedians Are

The Patton Oswalt Cosby comments tearing up the web on Saturday — reported on here by the Inquisitr’s Joshua Waldrop — may have had noble goals, but all they really do is prove what cowards Oswalt and his ilk (i.e. comedians who knew about the Cosby rape allegations and said nothing) really are.

Before getting into the guts of this, let’s have a refresher on what Oswalt actually said.

“The Bill Cosby thing is so f**king awful, and what’s worse for comedians is a lot of us have known for a long f**king time. It was a very badly kept secret in the comedian world, and a lot of us would talk about it. Bobcat Goldthwait would mention it all the time, and really people would just go, ‘ah, that’s bulls**t.’ It took this long, and what really drives me f**king crazy about it is the idea that these women… just imagine, he did the s**t he did to these women when they were young and they were on this upswing. ‘Oh wow! My life is starting, my career’s starting… I’m gonna meet Bill Cosby,’ and this awful thing happens. They can never talk about it, so he’s just shot the ground out from under them. Not just in that one incident, but for decades of their lives when they’re supposed to be enjoying the time when they’re in their physical prime, in their mental prime, enjoying life. Some guy takes that away from them, he doesn’t lose a second of sleep over it… and by the way, how many women have come forward at this point, like thirteen? That means that there’s hundreds. That means that there’s f**king hundreds. If you see one cockroach there’s a thousand in your house. And they had to sit there for decades while this guy did this over and over again, didn’t lose any sleep, was beloved, and even now, everything is being taken away from him, but at worst he lives in comfy seclusion for the last years of his life. He lives in absolute luxurious exile for the rest of his life. That is one of the horrors of life.'”

So, TL;DR the Oswalt Cosby comments basically state that Oswalt and Goldthwait and all their buddies knew for a number of years that Cosby was raping women, but for some reason — self-preservation or just an outright hatred for the victims — they didn’t see any reason to get involved in any real capacity until now.

After everyone else had laid it on, and it was safe to do so. (Because Cosby may be rich and famous but he can’t possibly sue everyone who calls him a rapist.)

While the guilt or innocence of Bill Cosby is another matter entirely, and I’ll admit it certainly doesn’t look good for the funny man with around 20 or so women coming forward to share their stories — this righteous indignation shown in the Oswalt Cosby comments comes across as a comedian grandstanding.

They serve no other purpose than to A) if Cosby is guilty, get some publicity out of the pain and torment of rape victims he couldn’t find the time or backbone to help two decades ago; or B) if Cosby is innocent, join in on a public crucifixion without the facts and evidence to back it up.

Many of our commenters on the Inquisitr Facebook page had similar thoughts to mine.

“Cindy Eaton: ‘And not one of you a**holes came forward.’

Britty Faye: ‘i dont get it…someone could have saved these women if they spoke up and they didnt. it disgusts me. the guy seems so distraught by it too its like hellloooo if it p***ed you off so much you should have opened your frigging mouth’

Michelle Pattillo-Boudreaux: ‘So the people who say they knew but he was to powerful are basically playing victims. I call bull***t. If they knew they should have reported it and since they didn’t, they who knew needs to be held responsible for not reporting a crime. I do not know if Cosby is guilty but if he did do the things these women say he did then he needs to be held responsible for the heinous crimes committed…. I do believe some of these women coming forward are looking for a payday and shame on them. Women who lie about something this traumatizing make it difficult for the real victims to come forward and taking seriously.'”

So what do the rest of you think, readers? Do the Patton Oswalt Cosby comments highlight the cowardice of Patton and the rest of his colleagues?
