Democratic Senator Mary Landrieu Does Tea Party Talk Show: It Doesn’t Go Well

Louisiana Senator Mary Landrieu, an endangered Democrat who is gearing up for a runoff she is expected to lose to Republican challenger Bill Cassidy, decided to pull out all stops in what could be her final campaign.

After months of pursuit by tea party radio host Jeff Crouere, he was finally able to land the Senator for a 10-minute interview that was contentious from the very beginning.

The topic that dominated the conversation — “Obamacare,” or as Landrieu insisted on calling it, “the Affordable Care Act.”

Crouere insisted that the reason Louisiana seemed to be turning against her was for the support Mary Landrieu showed to the healthcare law.

Landrieu denied that that was the case, and told Crouere he hadn’t seen the men and women or healthcare workers, who had “literally cried in my arms” telling her that the Affordable Care Act was “the best thing to happen to healthcare” in years.

Crouere countered that Landrieu hadn’t talked to his friends and family, who said their premiums were “going up by 25 and 30 percent in one year.”

Landrieu responded that healthcare costs were always going up, to which the host repeated “not by 30 percent.” He also asked why the senator, who has tried to walk the line of being a conservative Democrat, voted with President Obama “97 percent of the time,” to which Landrieu insisted that she was not for Obama, she was “for the people of Louisiana,” and then said that the healthcare law was “not the President’s signature achievement” as conservatives often think, because “he wanted a single-payer system and I stood up and said no.”

Landrieu admits that she knew there were problems with the law from the very beginning, but voted for it, and “would again” because “it was better than nothing.”

Probably the most contentious part came when Mary Landrieu attacked Crouere’s tea party beliefs.

“I am really sorry you’re part of the tea party because they’re taking the country in the wrong direction,” she said.

Shortly after, she cut off the interview before saying, “Love you, man, love your family” and hanging up. Have a listen for yourself if you want to hear all the back-and-forth.
