Meghan Trainor Surprises With Record, Song Nominations For ‘All About That Bass’

Meghan Trainor’s infectious hit “All About That Bass” has garnered two Grammy nominations, much to the surprise of those who make their business predicting these things.

After receiving nominations for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year for “Bass,” Trainor’s body-positive ode to the curvaceous female form, people took to Twitter to express their feelings about Meghan getting nods while One Direction and Justin Bieber were left out in the cold.

Meanwhile, Instagram tells that Meghan has been spending her time productively, learning the dance moves to Bruno Mars’ newest tune. Will we see her pulling out some of that when a video for “Dear Future Husband” is recorded? One can only hope.

Not everyone is upset, of course. After all, Trainor’s hit “All About That Bass” is the number two song on Amazon and Google right now, so someone is certainly enjoying the music — as well as the various parodies.

Meghan Trainor told USA Today that unlike some stars who love to talk about how they had no idea that they were nominated until their phones started buzzing with congratulations, Trainor had gotten in from the recording studio around midnight, and couldn’t sleep.

“I thought, ‘How am I supposed to fall asleep when we’ll know if I got it or not at, like, 5 a.m.? I said out loud, ‘It’ll be OK if I don’t get nominated; I’ll still be so grateful for the amazing year I’ve had.”

Her producer called a few hours later to let Trainor know that she’d gotten the nod for record of the year, and a bit after that, he called a second time to say that the song of the year nomination was also secured.

Meghan told USA Today, “I was out to breakfast with my brother. I ended up screaming in this little restaurant.”

In both categories, Trainor’s “All About That Bass” is competing with Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off,” Sia’s “Chandelier,” and Sam Smith’s “Stay with Me.”

“Sam is a friend of mine. I just texted him immediately, like, ‘Congrats! I’m rooting for you! I love you so much!’ He’s like, ‘You, too!’ I’m so honored to be in the list, I can’t even believe it.”

After the news settled in, Meghan went to Twitter to thank someone who means a lot to her.

The Grammy Awards will air on February 8. If you’ve had enough of that bass, but want to check out more of Meghan Trainor’s catchy pop hits, try her newest video. Just remember, she’ll know if you’re lying.
